The Voice of Dixie State Sports for 18 Years
A Life Dedicated to Broadcasting
Larry Martin Jewell was born on June 3, 1947, to Argel and Grace Eliza Wilcox Jewell at the Cottonwood Maternity home in Murray, Utah. He graduated from Olympus High School in the Spring of 1965 and earned a BS degree in Political Science at the University of Utah, where his radio career began at KUER public radio while attending college.
Following graduation, Larry worked as a radio personality in Sidney, Nebraska; Brigham City, Utah; and St. George, Utah at KZEZ/KDXU and KSGI. His warm voice and professional delivery made him a beloved figure in each community he served.
The Voice of Dixie State
Larry was the play-by-play voice of Dixie College sports for 18 years of his broadcast career, becoming synonymous with Rebels athletics. He also broadcast many area high school games and was the play-by-play announcer for the St. George Pioneerzz baseball team for three years. He loved all sports, but baseball was his first love.
Dixie College employed Larry as an Adjunct Professor for radio broadcasting, where he managed the college station for three years and served as the acting Sports Information Director at Dixie for one season. His passion for teaching and mentoring young broadcasters helped shape the next generation of radio professionals.
Community Service & Family
Larry dedicated his life to serving his family, church, and community. He served in many church callings including high council, bishop, stake mission president, and his favorites were gospel doctrine instructor and home teacher. He loved announcing for community events such as princess pageants, animal shows, county fairs, and 4-H events, and was a volunteer little league umpire.
He served several years as chairman of the board of directors for Southern Utah Federal Credit Union. Larry was a member of the Color Country Chorus for more than 10 years, often serving as emcee for the annual barbershop show, showcasing his great sense of humor and trademark smile with dimples.
Above all, Larry loved his family. He was always there to support and guide his children, encouraging their learning, love of sports, and the arts. Even when disabled and wheelchair bound, Larry was a great father and grandfather. The courage and cheerfulness he displayed during his three-year battle with cancer was an inspiration to many.
Legacy
Larry loved people and was a great influence for good in many lives. His voice brought excitement to countless sporting events, his commercials entertained radio listeners across Southern Utah, and his dedication to community service touched hearts throughout the region. This archive preserves his work so that future generations can experience the talent and warmth that made Larry Jewell a broadcasting legend.
