3, 2, 1. We're talking with Dixie College head basketball coach Dave Rose and last night coach, as we talked prior to the game, you were concerned ended up that you had a big victory. Yeah, you know, I was happy for the win. And after we got through the first eight or nine minutes of that game, the guys kind of turned on and kind of looked like the guys that have been playing most of the year. Like I said, we struggled quite a bit in practice, and they had a good game last night. And it'll be interesting how we come out tonight. I think last game, last night's game was important, and it was big, you know, to try and get that number one seed in the tournament. And, you know, with Rick's losing over there last night puts a different light on this game here. This will just be to finish out the season strong and to compete hard and, you know, to maybe win the league championship outright if North Idaho wins. Now, as you. As you look at this game tonight, well, let's look back at last game just a little bit. It did seem like suddenly the kids shifted into a team mode about eight minutes into the game. Well, you know, I think sometimes when you get going, your competitive juices get flowing and you see you get challenged a little bit, that, you know, you revert back to things that, you know really well. And it seemed to me that that's what the guys did, was that we got behind, and the more we tried by ourselves, the more we didn't get it done. And then all of a sudden we started to get and get some runs and get a good steal and a defensive rebound and get a break and those kind of things. And then the guys seem to get back in the flow a little bit. And, you know, without those runs, this team really can be really complacent and really kind of stale. And in this game here tonight, I think it'll be really a big factor if we can get that defensive pressure and if we can get those rebounds, because I think that Ricks is really going to try to control the tempo of the game. The last game we played him, I think, was a 74, 71 score. Somewhere in that range. It was in the low 70s. You know, that's where they like to play. And, you know, we like to play obviously, a little bit quicker than that. So, you know, hopefully we'll be able to dictate the tempo of the game. Talk about that reverting back to things earlier in the year, the kids would revert to individual play. That must be encouraging to the coach. To see them revert to team play. Well, I think what they did is they really got down and competed. I thought Farron did a great job, you know, getting a lot of offensive rebounds and putting them back. And then Spell did a real good job coming in and giving us a big lift offensively. He went 8 for 8 and hit a three point shot and those kind of things. We just got some good performance out of a lot of guys. We were very fortunate last night. I failed to shoot the ball well. I didn't feel we defended as well as we could, but we scored 117 points and so their 98 didn't seem as big. If we had a struggle from the floor and maybe shot in the high 40s or the low 50s, that that 98 would have been a lot bigger. I think this Rick's ball club is another big ball club. Your big men are going to be challenged again. Well, they're big, they're strong, they're great looking athletes. I mean, Clyde's got himself really a good looking team and they shoot the ball extremely well. They rebound very hard. Obviously our strength will be our quickness and if we don't use that quickness in the game, then we can really neutralize it. They're a little older kid too. Most of them are returned missionaries. He does have quite a few sophomores and I think that maturity lends itself in a huge factor. As you look at this Rick's ball club, they're always good shooters and it seems like they always have good shooters and they spend most of their time working on running plays for jump shots. And that's a little bit different than our style. And so it'll be interesting how we defend. I think sometimes our guys are a little bit soft defending that kind of style because they don't think the guy can jump up and shoot it. Maybe not that they don't think he can shoot it, they just don't think he will. You know, you guard yourself all year long and you start to get into a pattern of what you think people are going to do. And unless you really concentrate and realize you know what the other people are trying to do to you, you maybe lull yourself to sleep a little bit or they can do that to you. And then those jump shots become a real big factor. You've got the championship, at least a tie. You'd like to get another win. What are some of the other things you'd like to do with this game tonight? I had to get it over with with a win. Are there some Rotations that you're going to experiment with tonight. There's no experimenting. We're playing, we're playing to win. We're playing to get better. And you know, our guys, you know, we need to improve. And I think that that's the way we look at every game is we want to get better. And I really thought that our defensive intensity lacked at times. I felt that because we were playing so well offensively that we just kind of didn't really care defensively at times. And they got five and six offensive rebounds. They out rebounded us on the offensive boards, 26 to 17 or something like that. And you know, those are places that in order to be a real good championship team and to get things done, you can't afford to let those kind of things happen to you even when you're having a good night offensively. How good a team is this one? Well, I don't know, Larry. We'll just keep on playing and see how it comes out. Coaching lineup, any changes tonight? No, we won't change. We'll just keep going at them and hopefully we'll be a little bit more intense tonight defensively and that's about to change. I'd like coach Dave Rose. Congratulations. It's been a great season for you. Best of luck tonight. Thanks, Larry. Thank you. Three, two, one. We're talking with Ricks College head basketball coach Clyde Nelson. And coach, this has been a whale of a year for your first year at Ricks. It's been a good one. You know, I really, more than anything else, I think the kids have really come together. You know, we come from a lot of different walks of life, but you know, with the return missionary and the freshmen and that they've all just been able to get together, they're real good friends with each other. Our road trips have been a lot of fun Just being around them and that's probably a big part of our success, is their friendship. They're not afraid to give it up to somebody when somebody's hot and not selfish at all. And sometimes that's a problem for us because I think we're too nice and giving it up instead of taking the shots that we should. But that's been the big part. It's pretty easy to coach when you got kids like this. In all honesty, has this team done better than you thought? Probably not as well as you'd hoped? Well, there's no question that I didn't know what to expect when I first got the group at the beginning of the year as we played and we said this all along. There's 10, 11, 12 kids out there that can play. And I had a hard time picking a starting group until the two days before. And I always like to have them in their roles before that, but I had a hard time doing it. But we've been able to do that, and everybody's accepted their roles. The kids are coming off the bench real well. Matter of fact, last night, our five kids off the bench played the best for us. And so, you know, that's been a good part of Rick's college, and it's been better. You know, it's kind of a dream come true. I didn't expect to be where we are right now. I didn't expect to. You know, you figure if you get 500 the first year. I know in my interview with the president, he says, you know, we understand it'll take a year or two to build a program. So we're, you know, we're not really. So the worst thing is now they're going to expect it every year, but, you know, it's been a great year for us. I really enjoyed the kids, and hopefully we can finish it, you know, on a good note. We didn't have a good game last night, but, you know, coming here to Dixie and playing the last game here and then getting in that tournament, we want to finish it on a good note. I know you played at this level, but now that you've coached at this level here, you're the last game of your first full season at Riggs College. What's been the difference between coaching at junior college and coaching at high school? Biggest thing for me is to have more patience than the kids. You know, in high school, you have those kids in your program for three years, and they, by the time they're senior, they, you know, they better know what's expected of them or it's too late, you know? And I think here, I mean, it took until after Christmas before I think the kids really start understanding. And I think some of the kids who we've had to break down a little bit out of what they're used to playing, it maybe is just starting to come around now, you know, and that's a kid like Danny Bauer who averaged, you know, I think it was like 35, 36 points a game in high school in Idaho, you know, he finally, last night, had 29 for us and played to maybe his capability, but he also had to understand he doesn't have to shoot it every time. You know, we got guys that can shoot it. Just like him. So he's got to be able to give the ball up. And he had a great game last night. Probably saved us from getting blown out. You know, at least we had chances or we kept close enough throughout the whole ball game and largely because of him. But, you know, have patience in the kids a little bit. And probably the other thing is have a little bit more patience on the road. The road, I think more than anything else, it takes a little bit out of the kids. That bus ride, the nine hour bus ride, you know, trying to play the best of your ability, you just can't do it like you want to. I mean, there are sometimes you can. But, you know, I just see people coming into our place after going to Northern Idaho and coming to our place, and it's a completely different team than what we saw at their house. So, you know, those are things I really had to. And I'm sure I've got the biggest one to look at is the recruiting coming up where, you know, you always had an excuse in high school that you just got what you have and you can only go with that and you can't worry about it. But now, you know, it's pretty much my game and the people I get in are the ones that have got to perform. So I think I'll see a little bit more of that. This year we had four or five kids that we brought in that Coach Gardner had already signed, six or seven kids. So it really wasn't totally my recruiting. And next year it'll probably be about same because I know we have five or six returned missionaries coming back that Coach Garnett had already signed. And we've got a couple kids I've talked to and a couple kids that will be coming up there. So that'll be the interesting part. I think maybe not so much when this year gets over with, but when the recruiting part gets over with, then I'll know. I've had a few years, a full year, and wondered what I'm doing. Looking back, the trip to Rick's and the trip to North Idaho may have keyed Dixie's championship in this league. What about facing Dixie coming this way now? What's going to be the challenge for Ricks? Well, it's still the same challenge. You know, they are so good. I mean, the athletes they have, and we don't match up well at all with them, but we just have to do the things that we, that we did up there at Rick's. You know, we're going to have to try to limit the possessions of Dixie College, you know, I know they're used to averaging 103 and we, in order for us to win, we. Because we can't score 103 if you left us in here for an hour by ourselves. So we need to limit that play. Our good solid defense that we have been, have done pretty well and then, you know, just be patient. It's not that we're not going to pull the ball out because we don't do that. We'll take the first shot we get, but be patient in what we're doing. I thought we were successful at Rick's against Dixie. I thought our game plan was good. We just forgot to play 40 minutes. I think we only played 35. And in that last five minutes where we had an 11 point lead and blew it and you know, still had a chance to win it with the last second shot, but, you know, we also caught Dixie at a good time. I know right now they're playing as good as anybody. You know, they have the, they got all the capabilities. They got good size, good quickness, good shooters, good inside play. And so we have to, you know, we can't stop everything. We're going to try to take a few things away and see what happens. Starting lineup tonight for the Vikings. We'll start the way we've started all year long. Lance Jensen will start at center. Our four spot will be Ryan Jensen or Ryan Williams. Our three small four will be Cass Baldwin. Our two guard will be Jarrett Peterson. And our point guard would be Kevin Grant. And they've been, you know, they've been the solid ones. They're the ones I thought that really struggled last night. So hopefully they'll come out and have a good game tonight. Kevin Grant, coach's son, has he been a help out there on the floor? Oh, there's no question he's been a big help for us. He knows a lot of things, you know. I see. In fact, I had a good conversation with him about that, you know, and I asked him, didn't you ever want to play for your dad? And he says, no, unless I was far superior, better than what he had, I didn't ever want to play for him. And he says, and I know I never could have been. And so he's a coach, he's a good guy to have on the floor, a good coach's player because he knows and has a good sense of basketball and has been very good for us. Finish up down here at the Burns arena with the tournament here next week. Is that going to Help you in North Idaho to get an advanced look at the gym? Well, according to Salt Lake and Utah Valley and. And snow, I guess it is. We had things lined up where we were going to practice Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday in here because we're staying down for the week, and they called and we're really upset, and so we're not going to practice in the arena. We're probably going to go up to Cedar City once or twice and practice in the old gym. So according to them, yes, it's going to help us and it's an advantage. But shoot, everybody's played in here at least one time. They're going to be able to shoot around. I don't think the only one that really has the advantage is Dixie, because I play here every night, you know, or every day that they're here. So I don't think it would give us an advantage to be here at this late time. You know, this place looks a lot like ours with the red seats and is a nice place to play in. And I couldn't think of any other better place other than ours to play a tournament in. I really enjoy it down here. Gotta ask you one more question. I know you're gonna be involved with golf, I know you're gonna be staying down here and all of this, but gotta ask you, has this been a fun season for you? Have you enjoyed coaching at this level? It really has. I've really. I've really been. You know, it's been fun for me. I've had to make a lot of adjustments. We made adjustments up there. My wife made them a lot faster than I did in Rexburg. But there's no question it's been a lot of fun. And again, I just put that back on the kids because they've been so easy to coach, they've made the transition really easy. You know, the scary thing is we're running the same system I did in high school, only at a little different level, higher and doing a few different things. But it is a lot of fun for me right now if it was, and I even think if it wasn't the winning part of it, it's been so good. If we weren't there, I still think it would be fun just because I enjoy. I mean, it's always been a goal of mine to be in college, and I enjoy being here, and it definitely is fun. Coach Guy Nelson, congratulations on a successful year. Good luck tonight. Thanks very much. We'll need all the luck we can get. I don't think that'll make a Big difference. Starting lineup tonight for Dixie, you're talking about a new chemistry. Have you decided? Well, I think we're going to change up a little bit from last week. I think that was one of the things that maybe we didn't do as well as we could have. It's just, you know, I think that we need to get a lot more rebounding power in there. We're going to start spelling Davis and Ferrin and Curtis on the front line and then we'll start Shimon and Troy in the back. I really need Troy and Shimon to come down and get me some rebounds tonight. And Curtis has got to battle the boards. And then, of course, Bell and Ferrin and then, you know, those other guys we bring in off the bench, like Travis and Deco are going to have to really crash the boards and defend for us. Also the boards, defense, that's the key. I think so. I really believe that if we let them get up close to their average, that we're going to struggle. What about the coach? You don't adjust to the losses? Never do. Do you, as a coach once you have one of those losses? Well, it's been kind of a long week for me and, you know, to make this. To make this trip up here. Yesterday was 13 hours on the bus and it seemed like it was. Could have been three or four days on that bus. It was the longest trip I've ever made and I just don't like that feeling. I want to get it out. I want to get back on a winning track and, you know, hopefully it will happen here in a little while for this. This team is a little tough to maybe compare with some of the other teams. Do you have a hunch about how this team might come out? Well, right now I'm really confused. They've been great competitors since we've had them here, and I've seen them come back from some real deficits and pull out some games. But this will be a real interesting experiment for. For us here to come out here tonight because I know each one of them has got a reason in their own mind why they think that we weren't successful last week and they need to put all that behind them. You know, I feel it's a huge game for us. I mean, we need to win. We need to get everybody back on the same page and, you know, go on from here. Can't even think about CSI yet. Well, I haven't. We haven't mentioned it and we won't mention it until this thing's over. And, you know, no matter what the outcome, win or lose, we've got a huge challenge there tomorrow night. And it's just that the games themselves don't mean anymore. I mean, this is just as important in the league standings as the one we play tomorrow night. And so we're taking this one, you know, first, and then we'll tackle that one tomorrow. You've had two breakthroughs on the road. Any other breakthroughs that have got to help you? Well, this is really important for us. You know, it's. This game here is a little bit different than a breakthrough because there's been a couple teams that have come in here and won already, and those teams, when you get teams chasing the league championship, and if other teams come in and win on someone else's home court, it puts a whole bunch of pressure on you guys to come in and win on that home floor. Coach Dave Rose, thank you for being with us. Good luck tonight. Thanks, Larry. Appreciate it, Dave. Thank you. Because it's hard for them to be consistent. They're just young kids, and people are scouting you, and people are taking things away, and kids get sick, and it's hard to really be consistent with just a couple players. And so I'm real pleased with the balance. It causes a lot of chemistry uneasiness at times because some kids want more time and some kids want more minutes, and other kids want more points and more shots. But we can work through that. But I really believe that the talent level, as far as these guys are concerned, is good and the work ethic is good. One of the things that's happened in these four games is the leadership ability of Farron Hand has come to the top. I think that Farron and Shimon have really, you know, picked up as far as, you know, leading us in big baskets when we need big baskets. Guys have started to figure out that when we're coming down the wire, that we can run a couple plays and get the ball down the Farron, and that he's going to do something cool with the ball, and if he gets fouled, he's been shooting free throws well. And so, you know, I just really think that our team has matured a lot from the first time we played. We played 16 games, and they've matured a lot. But we've got a lot of work to do to be as good as we need to be. Darnell Stamps, the freshman, has also come to the forefront for you. Darnell had a good weekend at home this past weekend. The first time out on the road was kind of difficult for him, but he's getting a little bit more aggressive offensively and he's been a good rebounder since the day he's come in and has helped us that way. And I just think he made some real big shots for us in the Salt Lake game and helped us win that one. We've been talking with Dixie College head basketball coach Dave Rose on today's Rebel Report on ksgi. Thank you. Coach. Sam.
