Monroe College out of Rochester, New York is Brian Fry. Frey, young man, six and one record on the year, has one of the two losses that Monroe has. Chris Leonelli, right handed batter playing right field, fakes the butt on the first pitch. It's ball one, Brian Fry, Monroe College of Rochester, New York. The Tribune. Believe it or not, Tribunes, I should say that's the nickname, one of the unusual ones. Leonelli fakes the butt again. Ball two. Just inside. Two balls, no strikes on Chris Leonelli. Leonelli.339 hitter on the air. Sometimes when you look at the junior college batting averages, they're inflated somewhat. This is primarily a hitter's game at college level. The pitch on the outside corner. Strike one, called two. One count on Chris Leonelli. Leonelli, who's been an outstanding player as a freshman, Slightly closed stance, right handed batter, Fry Wines, high and outside, way outside catcher Bob Hurlbut. Let's see if we can set the defense as we go. Hurlbut is a catcher. He's a big one, about 6ft 4 and definitely a professional prospect. Drafted last year by the Astros, did not sign three. One pitch, swung on, grounded up the middle behind second base. The second baseman, World's Fire, sliding into first. But out is Leonelli. So a great play by the second baseman for Monroe as John Raveno, second baseman, fires to the first baseman, Bill Givik. And we'll pick up the lineup as we go. One out. So on a four to three, one man away. And to the plate, Kelly Peterson, right handed, hitting third baseman. Peterson has been the prime power source in postseason play for Dixie. Although he has just six home runs on the year, three of them have come in postseason play. Breaking pitch on that outside corner. Strike one. Kelly Peterson, Brian Fry, left handed pitcher, 1.35 earned run average.4 Fry on the year. Fastball just inside, Just inside. Talk about a good arm. Fry has it, but the catcher throws it back almost as hard. Hurlbut the catcher, Frye winds, fires. Line drive into left field, into the corner, off the wall. It's going to be held to a single. It's a short porch at left field, so a man on. Kelly Peterson drives it hard down that left field line. One man on, one man out. And the crowd seems to be with Dixie. There seems to be a group of fans that still like Monroe. They've been here before. This is the fourth trip, but they haven't been here since 1980. Reed Sechrest, center fielder, left handed, hitter up, one man on, one man out. And Frye Will have to work out of the stretch. Over at first base, left handed first baseman Bill Guzik staring eye to eye with his left handed pitcher Peterson wearing number 15 on his back. Small, laid off, not a steel type laid off. Frye Wines fires, just misses outside going for that outside corner. Ball one. So Frye, there is tension, there's no question about it. There's an interesting feeling. There's kind of the excitement that you get with Hutchinson and yet it's a different ball game. It's more of a dramatic game. The pitch swung on and missed by Secrest. Strike one. One ball one. Strike count. Henriet Sechrest, the freshman number three starter on the pitching mound for Dixie too. We'll see him if Dixie gets to that third game. Breaking pitch. Call strike on that inside corner. Sechrest watched it. One, two count coming up to Secrest. Peterson on first base by way of the line drive off the left field wall. One bounce to the wall played expertly by Wintermouth. Steve Wintermutt, left hander against left hander. Frye against secret breaking pitch has Secrest ducking, but it's way inside. Two, two count coming up. Brian Fry on the mound. Six foot, 190 pound left hander. He is a freshman. He'll be back. Let me double check that. Nope. Sophomore. Breaking pitch and the dirt gets away from the catcher. Peterson thinks better of it. It's early in the ball game. Full count coming up to Secrest. Frye does not want to lose the left handed batter. Lefty against lefty, he had the advantage. One on, one out. Leonelli almost had the base hit. It took a good play by the second baseman to go behind second base and throw him out at first. Peterson short lead off, being cautious as first base. 3, 2 pitch line towards the second baseman. One bounce to the shortstop. Will it go for two yet? 4, 5, 3. Double play ending the first inning. No score. Monroe about to come up. Let's take a minute and a half break with XV Kelly and we'll be back. Yes, we are here at Dixie Interior celebrating the total wall to wall super Saturday sale. I'll tell you what, they got some deals here, Darrell. Let's look at some of those deals we talked about late on a swing. Strike one. Tolbert not thought to have that great a fastball. But he throws hard enough in the 80s, in the mid-80s and there are scouts looking at him. 6ft 4. The pitch high on the fastball. One ball one strike count. Steve Wintermuth, left fielder. He's the man that held Kelly Peterson to a single after playing that one expertly off the left field wall outside with a fastball. 21 count on Wintermouth from Monroe. Jim Wintermute, the brother in right field is batting second. Rocky Stefano, center fielder batting third. And then Bob Hurlbut, the catcher for Monroe. The pitch fouled right off the right dugout where Gordon Jolly didn't have enough chance to even flinch into the Dixie dugout. Foul ball definitely late. Tolbert firing harder than Wintermute has time so far. 2, 2 Count to the leadoff hitter from Monroe. Mark Tolbert winds, fires, pitch swung on and missed. Strike three. So Tolbert swinging strike, has the first out. And yes, the fans seem to be rooting for Dixie. Colorado has been good for the Rebels this year. They clinched the ICAC title by sweeping a doubleheader at Colorado Northwestern and then knocked off the powerful Otero team from Mahunta Colorado on the doubleheader last Monday in Helper, Utah. Left handed hitting. Jim Wintermute up one out, nobody on breaking pitch, just misses outside. Ball one. Jim Wintermute south by hitter. A little bit taller than his brother. They say it looks a little taller. According to the program, he's an inch shorter. I wonder if they've got those reversed. Fastball inside ball. Two, two. Oh, Cap, I don't know. Does Jim look bigger than Steve? Open stance against Tolbert. 20 count. The pitch fouled off to the left side and definitely Monroe has not timed. Tolbert. Two one count. Coming up to Jim Wintermuth. If we go through the rest of the lineup, Brian Stevens is batting number five. He's a designated hitter. Frye will not be in that position. Batty number six will be Bill Guzik, the first baseman. We'll finish it out as we go. Tolbert High with the fastball. Three one count. Tolbert. One of the strengths has been his control, but he hasn't really shown a whole bunch yet. Did get the strikeout on the first batter. No score. We're in the bottom of the first inning. Game three of the National Junior College World Series. Ground ball into center field, just beyond the diving. Mike Page. Base hit. There goes the null hitter, if you will. One man on, one man out. And coming to the plate, number 21, Rocky Stefano. Stefano, 5 foot 10, right handed hitter, hitting sophomore on the year, averaging a cool.475. As we said in in college, the averages sometimes get inflated. Mark Tolbert working out of the stretch. Dixie has been traditionally coming from behind in late games. They started the season with a five and six record. Then over the last 29 games they were 23. Six slightly crouched fans. The number three hitter around to Bud Stefano. It's right out in front of the plate. Tolbert's going to go to second base. Throws wild into center field. Moving on to third is Wintermute. The throw from the center fielder, Secrest no good. The throw fake coming back to the second baseman. So on a butt. An error by the pitcher and it's on second and third. But in an E on the pitcher puts him in a second and third. And Dixie has a whole passel of trouble right now. Nobody out. Two men on a good throw would have started the double play. Tolbert just threw it into center field. Secrest coming back the other way. Really didn't have a hope of getting the man at third base. So on third base, Jim Wintermute. Rocky Stefano reaching on the error on the bunt. Who's into second base? Monroe is threatening. One out and the slugger, Bob Hurlbut is up. Number two in home runs on this team. First base is open. The pitch. Swung on. A missed strike. One. Power against power that time. Tolbert at six four. Hurlbut at six four. Everyone else looks like shrimps. They're big. One man out. First base is open. First baseman for Dixie, Chad Erickson playing in the next pitch. Fouled into the right field. Stands right down the right field line. And as long as he can throw strikes, Tolbert seems to have Monroe behind. The fastball is humming today. Oh, two count on Hurlbut. One out. Two men on in scoring position. The pitch high. Sid Smith up to get that one. One ball, two. Strike count. Bob hurled it big. Strong right handed hitting catcher. Men on second and third. One man out. Bottom of the first inning. The pitch. Swung on and missed. Strike three. By the time it got two thirds of the way to the plate, it looked like a blur. Tolbert is firing. That was the problem on the bunt. He fired it, threw it into center field. At the plate, designated hitter, Brian Stevens. Stevens, the leading home run hitter on the year for Monroe, has 12. That's a school record. Still into the stretch, men on second and third. First base. Open the pitch. Fastball misses outside. One ball, no strikes. Tolbert trying to work out of a jam, a jam that he partially created. Instead of sitting neatly in the dugout with a double play and watching his batters come up and try to score some runs, he's struggling right now. 10 pitch. Breaking pitch. Misses outside. A little high. Too dangerous. Mark Tolbert, he's a challenger. Dixie had two shutouts on the year. Tolbert had them both. 111 nothing. 11 nothing. A key game against Snow College. The pitch, right hander fires, grounds to the third baseman, Kelly Peterson. No. Goes to the shortstop. Throw on to first. Do they get him? Yes. Saves the run, just barely, stranding two at the end of the first inning. No runs, one hit, one man left on base. One error, no score. We'll check in with XV Kelly down at Dixie Interiors. Well, thank you, Larry, we appreciate that. Larry Jewell, of course, doing the play by play. We are celebrating here at Dixie Interiors with their super colossal total wall to wall sale. And I'll tell you what, I promised I would talk a little bit about the, the giveaways actually. Come in and register. There is no purchase or obligation necessary whatsoever. Just register to get your name in the hat. And then there is a point system in effect. If you. Depending upon what you buy and other factors like how far away you live or if you were to bring someone else in, a friend and have them register, you are allotted a certain number of points. And when they figure this all out, the person with the most points, of course, will win the grand prize. That's a beautiful prize. A Ridgeway brand grandfather clock. Beautiful, beautiful grandfather clock in a mahogany case. It is, I believe, a Chippendale reproduction style. So a beautiful. That is the grand prize. Second prize, a Zenith VCR. Zenith Quality electronics, that is second prize. Panasonic stereo is third prize. Fourth prize, a Xena 13 inch color television set. And there are many other prizes as well. As I say, no purchase, no obligation whatsoever. Just come in and register and then you're eligible to win points for various things and to win one of those great prizes here at Dixie Interiors. The deals are great here they are marked down between 20 and 70% as they celebrate the biggest sale ever. Of course, new ownership here at Dixie Interiors. I talked to Kevin Hanks, the owner here, a short while ago, a couple hours ago, and he mentioned the, he mentioned the fact of some of the goals they had which was to reduce the inventory of some of the old lines and bring in new lines, some new lines and, and that is the reason for all of the great reductions here. So you'll never save reason, that's for sure. Very good reason, Jeffy. So there's no way you can save more than this. At Dixie interiors, located at 61 E. Call Wayne's window furnishings at 628-1814. Southern Utah's Sports Authority Dixie's 890 KDXU we come back to the top of the second inning. Mark Roberts took an 02 pitch and lofted into right field. What should have been an easy out was lost in the high sky. It is blue, blue, beautiful sky out here and drops for a single in front of the right fielder. So a man on nobody out. Sid Smith swings, fouls it off. I think Monroe anticipating the bunt with the catcher Sid Smith. Smith, an all conference first team all conference catcher, also a first team all conference defensive back on the nationally ranked Dixie college football team. Question of whether he'll be back next year on football or baseball, whether he'll sign right after football. Coming back, coming over to first base Bry on the attempted, not really an attempted pickoff, just trying to keep Roberts close or trying to get an indication of whether the the bunt will be on. Mark Tolbert working out of the jam in the first inning. No score. We're in the top of the second. Dixie versus Monroe College of Rochester, New York. Mark Roberts on the looping single to right field on at first base, Brian Fry against Sid Smith. Right handed hitting catcher comes to the plate. Breaking pitch backs him in just a little bit. Ball one. One strike, foul ball and a now missed pitch inside one on one count to Sid Smith. Smith has been a very pleasant surprise for Dixie. The pitch to the plate fouled off to the right side up here behind the press box. The press box does dual purpose. One half of it deals with the baseball field Stoker Stadium here at Lincoln park and Grand Junction. The other half right behind me deals with the football stadium that Mesa State College plays on. Leading off first, Roberts 12 pitch fouled straight back by Smith. Took a little something off the pitch and Smith tried to time it, hit it the wrong direction. Nobody out for Dixie. Top of the second inning, no score. Expected that there are a lot of low scoring ball games in this first day because the aces are going. This is the only one that's been low scoring thus far unless you want to count the one run scored by Brookdale. But it was an 81 victory by Iowa Western. Darrell Allred is working with XV Kelly down at Dixie interiors today. I'll just a moment on that base hit to her center field Line drive making the turn of second bases. Robertson holding right in front of him. So Sid Smith lines it into center field. Consecutive hits and Dixie has something started and pitcher designated hitter combination today. Mark Tolbert to the plate. Darrell Allred is listening. I know he lived a number of years in Omaha, Nebraska. Iowa Western. The surprise winner in game number one is from right across the river in Council Bluffs winter quarters. For those who are involved with Mormon history, men on first and second. Mark Tolbert the plate. Question will he bunt? No, he won't pitch into the dirt. Blocked by catcher Hurlbut. Ball one to Talbert. Dixie may be sensing a chance to put some runs on the board against the ace lefty for Monroe. The only loss I believe for Fry was in the first game of the regional championship. 392 from Monroe. 10 pitch chased. Low pitch fouled off Dolbert went after the one below the knees. 11 count dobert. 6ft 4 men on first and second man in scoring position. No score yet. Top of the second inning. Dixie vs. Monroe of New York. Whoever wins will stay at least two more days. We'll bring you all of the Dixie College action right here on kdxu. The pitch bunt by Tolbert off to the left side. That makes the count one and two as he fouls it off to the left. Didn't get the good bunt down. Observation, casual and yet meaningful observation by those in the press box is that nobody can bunt anymore. It's a lost art. Sounds like the old timer's talking again. Ya, they're right. There's not too many good bunts anymore. Chris Leonelli or correction Corey Meredith for Dixie has been known as a good bunter. Though the stretch bright comes to the plate line. Down the left field line. Foul right against the auxiliary fence. Colbert or Tolbert. Got a pitch and got out in front of it. Count holds one ball, two strikes fit Smith on first, Mark Roberts on second, middle of the order. Mark Tolbert leading home run hitter on the year for Dixie with 18 into the stretch. Fry looks at first, looks at second, comes to the plate. Breaking pitch, grounded behind third base foul. Just gotta got enough. I would say Wood on the bat, on the ball. But almost everyone's using metal bats now to hit it. Foul count holds one ball, two strikes on Mark Tolbert. Nobody out. Top of the second inning, no score. Dixie vs. Monroe College of Rochester, N.Y. south front Brian Fry. Not about. Not a bad strikeout to walk ratio this year, but not really an overpowering pitcher. Fast. Oh no. Breaking pitch in the dirt. Count evens. Two balls, two strikes. Broke that one off about at Tolbert's feet. Hurlbut earning his scholarship today. A couple of times he's had to block it. Beautiful temperatures. I guess what it's high 70s, low 80s at the most. And the wind blowing, so it's wind is actually blowing a little bit from the right field corner crossways. So if you get it up into the wind, it'll help if you pull it to left field, if you hit it to right field, it'll slide a bit. Little whole set up. The wind had shifted for this game. In the first game I was blowing out for much of the game. Or in the second game, I should say. The first game today it was still a little afternoon breeze. Beautiful countryside. Grand Junction, Colorado. 2, 2 pitch coming up to Tolbert. Nobody up. Runners lead off first and second. Fry to the plate, bounces the pitch once again. Hurlbut off with a mask, keeps the ball in front of him. Count has been worked. Full, full count on Mark Tolbert. Do you want to gamble? Three, two pitch, nobody out. But you have a potential all American catcher behind the plate. You gamble, send the runners with nobody out. Trying to get something going. Line drive is liable to be a double play. Mark Tolbert will hit the line drives. Choking up on the bat just slightly, giving a concession with two strikes on him. Fry comes to the plate. Breaking pitch, fouled off to the left side. So Tolbert hanging tough count remains full third hitter of the inning. Dixie had a runner on in the first inning, but the double play from Ravino to Ferg to first baseman Gizzik erased. Dixie's rally wiped any runners off the base. Dixie, bottom half of the first inning, stranded. A couple of runners. Mark Tolbert, Bach. Bach called on Frye, so the runners move up. That puts first base open. And do you walk him now? You have a three, two count. Highly unlikely. First baseman is brought in to the buck on Frei. Moves Roberts up to third and Smith to two to two. The second base position, slightly closed stance for Tolbert. Now he has two runners in scoring position. Frey into the stretch, looks back, comes to the plate. Fastball called. Strike three on that inside corner. One man out. Frey rises to the occasion. Two men on, one away and Corey Meredith to the plate. Left handed hitter Corey Merida.357 average. On the year, right hander against the southpaw Fry. Dixie can score runs, there's no question about it, especially in postseason play. The problem is as they've had to battle from behind most of the ball games this year. Late in the season, I should say into the stretch. Bry will still go into the stretch. Meredith wants timeout. No score. But Dixie threatening. That was a big, big strikeout by Frey. Hall of Fame pitch, knee high, inside corner. And Tolbert could not pull the trigger. First strikeout of the day for Frey to the plate. The pitch, just inside. Umpire behind the plate is Randy Frederickson. Ball one to Corey Meredith. Chad Erickson on deck. Mike Page, if needed, will be behind him. And we'll be through the order one time for Dixie. Seventh hitter of the day for Dixie. Corey Meredith, one ball pitch looped into right center field. Two runs will score. No, at least one. Smith around third base will be held. Didn't get a good start. So Dixie takes the one nothing lead. Looper into right field. Might have had a play the second baseman if he hadn't been pulled in. So a single and an RBI for Meredith. Mark Roberts makes a one nothing Dixie. Top of the second inning, Smith on third, still one man out. And Chad Erickson, an oddity if you will. Left handed thrower, right handed hitter. There are very few of those wandering around. Ricky Henderson, another one. Most of the left handed throwers, right handed hitters or pitchers. Erickson does his share, but Erickson, tight end on the football team, number eight hitter. The pitch swung on, a miss. Strike one. Erickson almost burst a button across the top of his uniform on that one. He wanted to. He wanted to make this four nothing. Man on first, man on third, Corey Meredith. Man with the RBI on first base. Jizick staying close at first base. Holding the man on. Leading off third is Smith. Up and in to Erickson. Leans away from it. 11 count to Chad Erickson. Dixie loses. We'll be back here tomorrow at 2:00pm Dixie wins. Will be here Monday at 2:00pm with game two. Dixie wants to win. That'll assure at least three games here at the Junior College World Series prior to the plate breaking pitch. Erickson misses, swung on a miss. Tried to time it and didn't chase the tempting breaking pitch. Gordon Jolly down the third baseline. Has a little bit of a smile on his face. Breeze is playing havoc in the press box. One two count to Chad Erickson. Bottom of the order. One more. The ninth hitter, Mike Page on deck. One man out. One man in, two man on foul. Straight back. So Fry who spent a lot of this game so far working out of the stretch. Tolbert has a tenuous one nothing lead. I'm not sure about that young man's hat that just went in front of us. He needs sunglasses. A pink day Glo pink hat just went in front of us. Down, down below. As soon as some eyes adjust. 1, 2 pitch breaking pitch. Up and away. 2, 2 count coming up to Erickson. Fry 1.35 earned run average right now has the one given in. Erickson trying to nurse this one, see if he can get another run home. Dixie College confident but not overconfident. The pitch breaking pitch just misses Hurlbut slight hesitation. Tough call, tough one to take. It was close. Brian Fry southpaw for Monroe. The ace of the staff into the stretch. Comes to the plate. Breaking pitch. Lined to center field. No lined into the shortstops mitt. Double play. Doubled off of first base is Meredith Erickson. Had the line drive look like it was going into center field and then suddenly died. So both innings end with double plays. At the end of the top half of the second inning. Dixie one run on three hits, a man left and it's Dixie one, Monroe nothing. Let's check in with XV briefly. A minute and a half's worth and we'll be back. Thank you. Thank you much Larry. The first hitter, Bill Guzik hit a ground ball into almost into right field. Mike Page ranged wide to his left to pick it up and just nip him at first base. So Guzik on the ground out four to three. One man out. Dixie nursing a one nothing lead. Mark Tolbert saw teammate Corey Meredith drive in Mark Roberts with a run in the top of the second inning. Dixie, one nothing. Tolbert one man out. Breaking pitch called strike on the corner against David Ferg. Ferg the shortstop, he'll be followed by second baseman John Ravino if we go that far. The bottom of the order, the number nine man, Frank McHoney. McCroney, the third baseman, pitched to the shortstop. Breaking pitch, just missed inside culvert. One was good. Second wasn't one. One count, one man out, nobody on for Monroe. Bottom of the second inning, Dixie with a one nothing lead. Monroe experienced here. Fastball, half swing. Ferg wanted to hold up and it was just too much for it. Strike two went around. No question. Ferg built a little bit like Spike Owen. Kind of your typical shortstop, Bill Tolbert. One, two pitch, fastball called strike three. Punches him out on that outside corner. Sid Smith rose ready to fire to third base. And the umpire, Randy Frederickson built up on that one. He takes a while, generate the energy and then punches out that third strike. Two men out, two up to. The gun. Down winter mid rounding third pitch. Outside ball one to Page. So Paige, defensive hero for Dixie, if you will, this time, Fry. 10 pitch to page. Grounded down the third baseline foul. Fry really isn't fooling a whole bunch of the Dixie hitters right now, but he's starting to look like he's getting more of his rhythm and that could be dangerous for Dixie. Tolbert may have to just hang in there the rest of the way. Fry winds, comes to the plate, bounces it off the play. But just as I say that, two, one pitch coming up to Page on deck, Chris Leonelli. Beautiful field. Just a beautiful field. Fry winds to the plate. Breaking pitch called strike. Brought it in across that outside quarter two, two pitch coming up to Page. And Fry's had an easy inning of it so far. The easiest inning of anybody so far. The pitch call strike three. That ends three up, three down for Dixie. So on the top of the fourth, no runs, no hits, no errors, nothing, nothing, nothing. And Dixie leads by a score of 4 to 1. Back at 90 seconds. Call Wayne's window furnishings at 628-1814. Southern Utah's Sports Authority Dixie's 890 KDXU. David Ferg, the only non New Yorker on the team, leads off the bottom of the fourth inning. Bottom third of the order for Monroe takes a ball. Next pitch. Just misses outside hit. Smith wants the appeal down on the first baseline. Did he go around? No question. He did not. Ferg took a call. Third strike in the second innings, 0 for 1 today. Tolbert wines and fires two. Zero pitch call strike. Ferg backed out of there, and there's no question that was a strike. David ferg from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the shortstop for Monroe College of Rochester, New York. 21 pitch from Marktobert. Fouled off to the right behind on the pitch again. Everything looks like a cue shot right off the end of the bat. Or they're way behind it today. A lot of foul balls to the right side. Tolbert does have a good fastball, but not great. 22 count to David Ferg. Leading off the bottom of the fourth inning. The pitch call strike three. So twice Berg has taken that call. Third strike. So Tolbert comes from behind to get that. Kelly Peterson on the. Throwing it around. The infield, threw it away. That will not count as an error. Sid Smith came up firing on that one to the third basement. He knew that one was a strike all the way. One man out. Ravino, second baseman, reached on an error on the shortstop his last time. Up high with the pitch. Had a 32 ground ball that Mark Roberts had some time with and threw it away. Threw it high to the first baseman. One ball count to Ravino. Tolbert back to the plate. Foul down the first baseline. Picked up by the coach there. And the wind has picked up. Suddenly changing and I mean, it's picked up. We're suddenly getting a gust of wind, but it's a gust of wind. Hang on. Tampa, Florida may be coming our way. Quite a heavy windstorm. Blowing programs, blowing seats. Garbage collectors are saying, oh, more business. Big burst of wind that came through. Kelly Smith may have lost his hat. Nope, he salvaged it. He turned his head, put his head down, and it's going to take him a little while for the tears to clear the dirt out of the eyes right now. Wow. Suddenly a burst of wind that came through. There goes another bit of statistic paper that's floating through. A lot of people lost some souvenirs in that burst. 11 count to John Ravino. Tolbert Wines comes to the plate. Breaking pitch, fouled off to the right side. One two count coming up to Ravino. Dixie with a 4 to 1 lead. We're in the bottom of the fourth inning. Three spot in the third inning is what broke things somewhat open for Dixie. Foul back on a 12 pitch. So Ravino hanging tough, choking up 0 for 1. Got as far as third base before he died. Error on the catcher on the delayed steal. Has one stolen base to his credit today. Pitch high. Two ball two, strike count. So Ravino did pick up a stolen base for his efforts. Then went on to third as Smith threw the attempted pickoff into center field. Outside with the pitch. Tolbert had a 12 count and has thrown two straight wide pitches. 32 pitch, full count for Ravino. That wind brought in some warm, too. Must have come right from St. George. And suddenly temperatures went up about 5 degrees. Pitch fouled back. Ravino just got a piece of it. A defensive swing. It's one of those keep alive until I can get the base on ball swing. Center field, there is a huge piece of fabric, mesh fabric, that has been draped over an extension to give the hitters a better background. And the top part of that has come loose now because of the wind. Three two pitch, breaking pitch. Hits the man in the left hip pocket. So reaching on the hits, batter is Ravino. And no, Tolbert will not have a 1, 2, 3 innings unless he can get the double play. Ravino wants to walk around a little bit. That one hit him right in the wallet. Doing some squats now. Has a big grin on his face, but not on his bottom. He hurts. He's rubbing it. One man on, one man out. And Frank Microning, number nine hitter, third baseman up. Tolbert would like to end this inning right now and take a little more rest to get his batters at a shot at it. Fastball fouled off. Monroe still hasn't timed Tolbert's pitches consistently. They do have one run, though, as Hurlbut looped a single into right field and drove in Stefano after the great relay play, gunned down Jim Wintermute at last inning. And on first pitch, fisted to the right side. Strike two. Tolbert came on the inside corner. Microni. And Microni was defensive on that swing.02 Count on Microni on deck. Top of the order, Steve Winterbit. Microni fouled out to the first baseman his last time up with Chad Erickson leading off first is Ravino. Pitch outside the attempted pickoff. Wild throw, but Erickson saves it. Smith trying to get Ravino off of first base. Erickson had to dive to scoop that one up. Smith and Erickson have spent a lot of time together this year. First on the Dixie College football team, now on the baseball team. One two pitch to Microni. Breaking pitch up high. Smith has him hung up. The throw to first baseman. Erickson drops the ball onto second base is the second baseman, Ravino. So Ravino gets his Second stolen base of the day. Erickson went on to second base. I don't think they'll call that one an error. Two ball two. Strike count on Microni. So Ravino has been tested. Reached on an error his first time, coaxed the walk this time, got stolen base each time and is in scoring position again. 2, 2 pitch to Microni. Inside ball three. And Tolbert a little erratic right now. 41 lead by Dixie is being threatened by Monroe. Monroe getting better pitching out of Fry, who had the first 1, 2, 3 inning without a base hit of the ball game by either pitcher. This one fisted short bounce to Tolbert throws him out at first base. Holding on a second is Ravino so jamming him with the fastball. Microni couldn't get around on it. One to three for the second out. Two man down in the top of the order. Steve Wintermute. Wintermute struck out swinging his first time up and then singled his last time up and was erased on the front end of a. Let's double check. They called. They didn't call that it out. They call that a foul ball apparently. And Microni is still up there, so it isn't an out. Still only one man out apparently. They ruled that it was a foul off of Microni. So it's a 3, 2 pitch. Once again, Microni has a new life. Hit off his foot apparently. 3, 2 pitch line to right field. Leonelli drifting in gets it. Leonelli coasting in. Ravino hung up halfway between second and third. As both teams were a little unsure. Leonelli thought that there was a. That was the third out. It turned out to be the same batter again. So Microni lined it to right field, got up into the wind and then became a looping fly. That's the second out. Leonelli now has to get the explanation from the infield about why that is not the third out. Gordon Jolly was thinking that was the third out too. And I don't think Gordon Jolly realized that it was the same batter. Steve Wintermith. The official score or the spot speaker announcer making an announcement of what had taken place there. I was looking for Steve Wintermute to be up and instead now it's Steve Wintermute. Top of the order. Ravino still out at second base. Two men out now and Winterme hit with the breaking pitch. So Wintermute is on its first base. Colbert throws the breaking pitch and he's getting wild. No action yet in the Dixie bullpen. That brings a tie in run to the plate in Jim Winterview. Four to one, Dixie with a lead. Two men have reached on hits on them, not by them. Strange, strange ball games. All of them have had some interesting twists, but that's to watch. Poetics. That's the Beauty of baseball. 41 Dixie with a late bottom of the fourth inning. Two men out. Jim Wintermere at the plate. Switch hitter batting left handed again. Pitch low with a fastball. Ball 1. Mark Tolbert has spent a lot of time on the mound the last couple of innings. Fielding. Jim saved one run. Some fielding mistakes have kept things going. Line to left field going the other way. Cut off by the left fielder. The throw coming through the plate. Cut off by the third baseman, Kelly Peterson. Jim Winterview plates his man. RBI single by Wintermute. It's 4:2, Ravino. Stolen base got him in position and he scores a run in Steve Wintermute behind on the pitch. Still lighted to left field. Corey Meredith up there with the throw. It was cut off by Peterson. Man on second and first, the Winterme brothers. And now you're getting into some of the power. Rocky Stefano, tying run on first base. And Stefano who doubled his last time up and scored the first run of the ball game for Monroe at the plate. Tolbert, foul ball coming right back behind to strike one. Stefano reached on the error on the bunt, on the attempted sacrifice. Doubled his last time up. So he's 1 for 2 on the run. Score one strike out. Mark Tolbert, big right hander into the stretch. Looks back at Wintermutes everywhere. This one line deep to center field. Back and drifting and getting it as the center fielder reads secrest. He settled under that one nicely. End of the bottom half of the fourth inning. One run on no hits, two men left on base and at the end of four complete innings of play, it's Dixie four, Monroe two. Let's take a 60 second break. We'll be right back. Get in on the fun of voting for Memorial Day with a new boat from Motorsports Land. Southern Utah's Sports Authority Dixie's 890 KDXU back at Grand Junction, Colorado, Dixie with a 4 to 2 lead as Monroe has played it runs in each of the last two innings, partially set up by Dixie's own mistakes. Two hit batters and I mentioned there were no hits that last inning. Of course everyone's saying oh dummy Jim Witter me to have the RBI single line drive down the left field line. Chris Leonelli, he'll go around first, headed for second. Nope, he's going to hold up Short left field line it's 302 right down the line, then tapers out to 365 in shallow left center, deep left center it's 410 and straightaway center it's 400. That's a short porch at left field. So Leonelli gets a single to lead off the fifth inning. Dixie with a 4 to 2 lead. Brian Fry working out of the stretch again. Kelly Peterson at the plate. Attempt at first base back easily. Here's Leonelli Monroe, no warm up action this time. Brian Frey has gone four plus innings now off of first base. Leonelli coming back to the plate to first base with a throw is Fry. Frey trying to keep him close. Dixie not an exceptionally fasting average. Speed mostly for the team. The pitch to Peterson called strike on the corner. Peterson knew it. He started to take a walk as soon as that pitch hit the catcher's miss. One strike count on Peterson. So Leonelli first pitch hitting lined the single to left field hole. One count on Kelly Peterson. Nobody out. Top of the fifth inning, Dixie with a four to two lead. They want those two runs back. Pitch line deep to left field, high, high and gone. Kelly Peterson off the light pole for a two run homer. And Kelly Peterson sends that one high hit the light pole and fell back into the field. But it was gone and the Fans love it. Two RBIs for Peterson. He is three four three on the day and Leonelli scores in front of him 6 to 2. Dixie out in front. Top of the fifth inning and just what Dixie needed to put a charge back into the the battery. Dixie will either meet the winner or the loser of San Jacinto, north and Cochise the feature game tonight depending on what Dixie does. Pitch foul straight back by Reed Secret right handed thrower. Left handed hitter is 1 for 2. Grounded into the double play his first time up. And then singles and score was last time up. Pitch just misses outside on the breaking pitch. Secrest looked at it, Hurlbut looked at it, Frederickson looked at it. They all agreed it was a ball. Although Hurlbut I think thought it might have been a strike one. One pitch loop to left field. High in the air. It's the Sun Field. Wintermute is battling it. Can he find it? Yes. Steve Wintermute. I don't think Steve Wintermute saw that home run until it got right above him and realized it was gone. But this one is the first out. One man down, Mark Roberts. Roberts reached on a single and scored the first run of the ballgame. Looping single to right field. Fouled out to the first baseman. His last time out. One for two, six to two. Dixie pitch. Breaking pitch, hit high into shallow center field. Back is the second baseman. He's calling for it. Drifting a little bit to the right center field area. Shallow or deep? Second base? Shallow, very shallow. And Roberts flies out to the second baseman. Roberts really has not hit the ball all that well today. Sid Smith, the number five hitter. Smith, a single and a walk. One for one today. Sid died on third base. And then when Erickson lined into a double play in the second inning. Fry looks like he has his rhythm, but Dixie is roughing him up. Still the pitch. Breaking pitch just misses. Just misses. Tough one to hold off on. Ball one, Sid Smith, right handed hitting catcher Frye to the plate. Fastball grounded right back to Frye. One bounce. Ryup throws it to first base. Ends the first, ends the top half of the fifth inning. One, two, three. After the damage. Two runs on two hits. Nobody left. At the end of four and a half innings of play, it's Dixie six, Monroe nothing. Back in their Monroe two. Back in 60 seconds. Newby Buick 391 West St. George Boulevard Southern Utah's Sports Authority New Dixie's 890 KDXU the Junior College World Series 32nd annual Junior College World Series and I believe this is 27 years here at Grand Junction, Colorado. Grand Junction has become for junior college baseball what Hutchinson has become for the basketball playoffs has been the place to be. Grand Junction continues to have a part of the problem that San Jacinto Junior College north coach Wayne Graham had made a comment about getting tired about coming to Grand Junction. That's after they won three straight tournaments. They've been here five straight years and that did not sit too well with the Grand Junction people. This Grand Valley here is a beautiful area, couple of national monuments nearby and it's beautiful. Hurlbut the catcher to lead things off singled in the first run of the ball game for Monroe. Last time up. He struck out his first time up, so he's 1 for 2. Mark Tolbert looking for his first 1 2, 3 inning if he can get it. Pitch misses high, ball one. Tolbert has struggled a little bit with his control. Hit two batters and locked one six to two. Dixie with the lead. Fastball outside. Colbert missing wide and missing high. Very wide, very high. Two zero count to Hurlbut. Next up is designated hitter Brian Stevens. 2o pitch. Swung on, a miss. Strike one. Hurlbut looks like he's got Tolbert timed a little better. Just didn't make the contact that time. Bottom of the fifth inning. This is scheduled as a nine inning ballgame. Dixie with a six to two lead. The pitch just misses outside three one count Stevens on deck. Bill Cusick the first baseman. Next one up after that, Mark Tolbert winds and fires. Fastball off the fist to the infield. Mark Roberts wants it on the grass. Part of the infield has it. So Hurlbut off the fist about to the shortstop. One man out. Brian Stevens to the plate. Stevens 6ft 2 or 4 depending on which source you look at. He looks at least 6:2 and at least 2:05 and is strong leading Home run hitter for Monroe with 12 on the ear. Fastball high and way wide. Ball one. Sid Smith getting some stretching exercises this inning. Catching Tolbert. Tolbert still throwing hard, although a little bit scattered. 10 pitch high again. Very high. Sid Smith wants to talk time out on the field. He wants to talk to Tolbert. Gordon Jolly wants to talk to Tolbert, too. Apparently, something's been noticed as the sun's coming down. It's starting to heat up the windows behind us and providing a little more heat for the press box. I get a little nervous here at the press box. Beautiful press box. Really nice. It's nice, but the windows swing out and up. And these are heavy windows. And there are a couple of protrusions, little arms that slip out of the wall just above you. Just above or just behind us on the wall here. And you put those out and rest the window on top of it. If those ever give way, I may end up somewhere down around first base on the force of this thing hitting me in the back. It looks like it won't, though. It looks like it's fast, fairly stable. But I still get a little nervous about these things, you know, earthquakes. This could be extra damage caused. It is a nice. It is a nice field, though. Beautiful press box. Great tradition. You can feel the tradition here, too. 20 pitch coming up to Bryan Stevens from Tolbert. Fastball sifted off to the right into the stands. People ducking. Strike one. Sid Smith and Gordon Jolly apparently spotted something. The conference with Tolbert. Two one count coming up to Stevens. Wines and fires. Fastball outside. Ball three, but at least it's closer. Scheduled to go in game number two will be Paul Allen. This southpaw. Allen has been a solid number two starter this year for Dixie. Tolbert. 31 pitch line to right center field. Leonelli trying to cut it off. Does so. Will hold Stevens to a single. So a single into right field by Stevens and Monroe, a team that can hit music. Coming to the plate. One man out, one man on. And no, this will not be a one, two, three inning unless Dixie gets the double play. Guzik has grounded out to the second baseman twice.02 on the day. And that's the word from the dugout. Watch out, Mike Page, he may be coming your way. Open stance against over. Coming to the plate. Fastball low. Just misses low. Ball one. Tolbert has been working from behind this inning on a 3, 1 pitch. Got hurlbut to pop out to the shortstop and keep up the single. Fastball grounded to the second baseman. Goes to the shortstop for one. Back to first. It will be not in time. So the lead runner picked off on the fielder's choice. Big bounce. Page got the lead man on at first base by way of the fielder's choice. Four to six, out for Stevens. Two men out. David Ferg comes to the plate. And replacing Stevens at first base is first baseman Gizek. Ferg, who has taken two called third strikes, battles Tolbert, but seems to lose the first two times. Shortstop. Fastball off the fist, gets beyond Tolbert. Paige will have a tough play. Flips, throws it over the first baseman's head. Error number four. Erickson will try to grab it dead. Ball hits some equipment behind us. No, they rule. The man at third goes home. Now Gordon Jolly wants to know. The first base umpire says, no. That isn't correct. Gordon Jolly's out and arguing. First baseman said no. They were just on their way. Gordon Jolly will get the explanation now. And the first base umpire saying no, you don't send him in on that. It hit some equipment behind the. Dugout. Send him back. Or do they? Nope, they'll have to go back. So, on what should have been a third out, just got beyond Tolbert for Greece. Of Ferg reaches on the error. Error on the second baseman. That's the fourth error of the day for Dixie on the throw. Going to third is Gizick. And on to second base is Ferg. Two men out. And John Ravino, who has reached every way but a hit and has scored the second run up at the plate. Two men out. Tolbert into a full wind up the pitch. Breaking pitch. Misses outside. Ball one. Two men on. Two men out. First base open. 1o pitch coming up from Tolbert. Tolbert has struggled in the middle inning. Fastball grounded. Big hop to the shortstop. Roberts up, throws the first base. Erickson gets it. End of the fifth inning. So no runs. One base hit. Two men left on an error by Dixie. And at the end of five complete innings of play, Dixie maintains that lead by a score of 6 to 2. Back in 60 seconds. Have you picked up your own Club Mac card yet at McDonald's? Tolbert leading home run hitter for Dixie, but the only home run of the ballgame has been stroked by Kelly Peterson of the Rebels. 1o pitch foul straight back. 11 count. Talking with Gordon Jolly a little prior to this game. I'm over here with my son celebrating his ninth birthday today. So I guess I can say happy birthday to my son Skyler.
