Transcript

This game broadcast is made possible by the support of our Rebel broadcast boosters. We'll mention their names throughout the upcoming game. Now for the details on the game, here is your sportscaster. Good evening ladies and gentlemen, Larry Jewell with you at the Dixie College gymnasium where tonight we bring you the contest to end all contests in the ICAC conference wars this season. And that's the number one ranked Snow College, the champions of the ICAC this season against Dixie College. Dixie College, the one team that stands in the way of the Snow College Badgers from having a perfect 120 season record once again in league play. Snow College on the season on the total season is 22 2. The two losses coming against Casper Community College and College of Southern Idaho, both in the CSI tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho. And that is no mean place for any ball club to play. Casper at one time or another throughout this season has been ranked number one in the nation. At times they fall away from that number one ranking, but generally they've been in the top 10 and often number one. And that's one of the teams to defeat Snow this year. Snow, when they have won, has generally not as won and has not won as impressively as Dixie has won, but they have not lost where Dixie has. Snow College generally wins by a few points where if Dixie's going to win, they generally blow a team off the floor. Seldom have the Dixie Rebels this year gone through a victory and had a narrow victory. The smallest margin at home was against the SUSC junior varsity, a scant eight points. And prior to that the close this margin at home for a victory was Pima College's. The victory over Pima College 15 points. There have been closer games on the road, but very, very few of them. It should be an interesting matchup between a couple of former Brigham Young University basketball players. The opposing coaches. Ronna Baglin, who came from Morgan High School as head coach there to take over the Snow College Badgers four years ago and has been able to build a consistently winning program at the Ephraim School. And Neil Roberts, who played a few seasons after Ronna Baeglin played at BYU but was a three year starter for the Cougars, who is in his first year as coach of the Dixie Rebel. Successful career that included two state championships in Class 4A basketball at Skyline High School. We had a chance to talk to Coach Neal Roberts earlier this afternoon. We found him out in the sunshine enjoying it and talked to him about this ball game and we'll be back with the interview with Coach Roberts after these messages. Ents brothers means quality. We're talking with Dixie College basketball coach Neil Roberts and Coach we're out where Bob Horlocher likes to coach. Out in the sunlight today. Well, days like today, I think everybody needs to be out in the sunshine. It's beautiful today. We see outdoor basketball anytime in the near future. Well, we'll see basketball anytime. Any place that people want to play basketball is basketball. And I had some opportunities to play on some outdoor courts in South America. One time we were talking just before this interview about expectations prior to this basketball game and I asked you if you were nervous and so I thought maybe you'd like to give the reply once again. Well, you just asked if I had butterflies and I says no, that passed several years ago. But yes, the anxiety is a ball game like tonight and really the success or failure of your season is pretty well contingent on how well you do play tonight. I'm not so concerned about win losses. I am that the players really feel good and satisfied with what they've achieved. If we play the best ballgame we can possibly play and still lose, that's all we can ask. But yet we are asking that we give our best effort. How good is this snow team? They're the only team that seem to be able to win on the road. Well, we try to put fingers on that and say why can't they win so well on the road and play a lot of games really close at home? They have a lot of confidence going for them right now. They haven't been beat really in three years and they won a conference. This was the fourth year in a row. They've got a great tradition going. They have a lot of players that have been through the battles before. Mundy, of course, is really an experience player. Wally Nielsen is an experienced player. McKinney. Those players really add to the nucleus of what's going on and therefore the abilities of these players to hold people together and to play well on the road is very important. I really believe that another important factor of winning on the road is those teams travel becomes important to you and we live on the fringe of a conference, as does Ricksburg live on the fringe of a conference, as does cncc. And therefore, when we go on a road trip, our closest conference game is snow, which is four and a half hours away, whereas snow is closest to the furthest road trip. Is that so it has a lot to do with it. They go to Price, which is right next door to them. They go to Provo, which is right next door to them. Yet here at Dixie in this ball game tonight, that shouldn't enter into it. They haven't had to travel enough to really fatigue them. They haven't had to stay overnight. We haven't had to do either. We should have a heck of a ball game. What about the snow college team? As far as what they're doing right now, it appears that they have hit a peak like you had just prior to the SUSC game. Well, they're playing exceptionally well. They're shooting the ball exceptionally well. They've got a lot of different players that are taking command on the floor. Last weekend they had all their players in one of the other games all scored in the 20s. So they're five starters. All of them are really contributing to what's going on. That really is an important factor. Because of that, it's hard to zone them, it's hard to man them because you can't really help and concentrate on certain type of people. And then because of that, it turns players like McKinney Loose and Mundy, which got 35 and 27, it really turns these players loose. It makes. It makes you go one to one with them rather than to try to concentrate on one particular area. Yes, they were really at a mental high. They had a lot of confidence going for them. They really feel good about themselves. Yeah, we have a lot at stake here, too. We have the possibility of winning this and getting invited to the regional playoffs. And that is the success of our season. That's what our goal has been, is to get the regional playoffs. And then from there you hope you will be able to get the nationals by winning a couple of ball games, but yet by winning this one we can. But yet Snow, on the other hand, really has a lot of pride and want to go undefeated. What about individual personnel? You mentioned that there are a couple of keys to this snowball club that may go overlooked. Wally Nielsen and John Warburton are a couple of them, I don't think. I never have overlooked John Warburton because I had a chance to watch him play so many times in high school and watched him get 42 points one time in high school. Excellent jump shooter, likes to put the ball on the floor. Well, he had 25 points against Rexburg and I think they overlooked him. They tried to zone him and let him shoot the ball from outside and you just can't do that with John. And that's really a key matchup to it us because Cal Paskat will be guarding. Cal is really an inside player, but yet we're going to take him outside and make him play against John Warburton and it's either going to one is going to be the short end of the deal. Either Cal's going to overpower him or else he'll go the other way around and then we'll have to really watch that early in the ball game. Other key matchups maybe the key of all is Kim Garrett and Mundy and Mike Mundy is the leading scorer in our conference. He's averaging almost 22 points a ballgame. At times he breaks through for 30, 37 points and last time they played, Kim actually outscored him, held him to 16 points where Kim picked up 17 points. And if we can get that type of effort again, I think we can win. What about Steve Conde on the that's really another key matchup. I felt last time we played that McKinney got the best end of the deal. He shot the ball extremely well from outside. Steve was really hesitant to go 20, 25ft away from the basket and guard him, but yet it will have to be done because he does have that ability to go clear out there. You mentioned the key basket and Warburton matchup. Are there any other things besides the individual matchup that you look for? What about general team matchup to determine which team's going to take command of the game? Well, also early in the ball game are our guards. We've got to extend up. We've got to put pressure on with our three guards that we run with Brett Allen and Mike Slocum. These two guards, super aggressive. They really help each other. They will slough and help a and if we can extend up and really get pressure on McClary and also Wally Nielsen, I think that will be our advantage. But yeah, we've really got to be aggressive defensively. We've really got to be aggressive board wise and then if we are those two things, the rest of it will fall in. We'll be able to run our break off our defense. We'll be able to run our offense with the confidence that if we don't score that we can get them stopped yet. We've got to get things going defensively and board wise before we can worry about anything else. Coach Neil Roberts, good luck tonight. Thank you for being with us. Thank you Larry. Back here at the Dixie College gymnasium, you heard Coach Neal Roberts talk about this ball club, this big, rugged Snow College ball club and they are big. They may be bigger than their listed height. So Larry McKinney is listed as 6 8. He's tall, long, armed, he's more like 6 10, and he plays much more like 610 than he ever plays like 6 8, although he doesn't have quite the muscle that Mike Mundy has. Mundy is listed as six' six and he may be closer to six' eight big rugged forward. Both McKinney and Mundy can go in deep or can shoot from outside. McKinney's a better outside shooter than Mike Mundy and that will be one of the keys tonight is how well Dixie College can shut off the outside shooting of Snow College. They're a good shooting ball. Pup Warburton, Larry McKinney and Wally Nielsen can all shoot from outside. Mike Mundy can hit the medium range jumper, although he can go outside on occasion. Brian McCleary is primarily a short range jumper, jump shot shooter, although he is a guard, but he is so good at jumping such a strong and explosive jumper that he can take a much bigger guard in underneath and explode over him for the short turnaround jump shot. And that will be one of the big problems for Dixie College tonight. Needless to say, Dixie College has the personnel and if it gets to depth, Dixie College has a better bench than Snow College, but with the starting fives you have to go with Snow College, mainly because they've been through this before. Three of the starters for Snow College were there last year when Snow went undefeated in conference play and then progressed into postseason play. So three have been there before with the same coach. Coach Ronna Baglin Dixie College came close last year and were primarily knocked out of any postseason play by a Snow College loss on the home floor and then the second loss to CNCC and almost redeemed themselves with a win at Snow College. They had the Badgers running in the first half, but Snow came back to overpower Dixie in the second half. Dixie College this year went up into EPRAM to play the Snow College Badgers in their brand new home floor and came close. After almost being blown off the floor in the first half, Dixie put on a furious procession in the second half to come back and almost pick off the ball game. We'll be back with the starting lineups of tonight's game after these messages. Get away and see the USA in a brand new Chevrolet from Sunland Chevrolet in St. George. Treat yourself to real beauty. See the new ones at Sunland Chevrolet. OD McGee, the family fun center in St. George, invites you to stop by and enjoy their exciting facility. Pinball, pool, air hockey and a lot, lot more. Enjoy the snack bar too at OD McGee. Taco Time at the east end of St. George Boulevard invite you to look for their coupon specials in the local papers. Enjoy yourself. Take the whole family to Taco Time. Sam. Back here at the Dixie College gymnasium, the presentation of the national anthem and the colors at mid court and the Dixie College flag. I've noticed some former Dixie College basketball players, a couple of the ball players from last year in the audience. Mike Lance, a native of Las Vegas, Nevada, who's now attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is not participating in basketball, spending his times with academics. And Colin Woolley, who played last year, the year before, also with coach Doug Allred in the final two seasons of Coach Allred's reign here at Dixie College. Let's take a look at the starting lineups for Dixie College and for Snow College. First of all, there is quite, I got to explain a little bit of what's going on. If you're listening to me and you're sitting here in the gymnasium, there is a casket that is being born by six of the male students here at Dixie College. A pony casket, kind of the burial of the Snow College badgers. Gets a smile from Mike Duffy, a little reserve guard for Snow College and the procession. Six pallbearers going out here mid court. I understand some of the cheerleaders, couple of the cheerleaders here at Dixie College, male cheerleaders leading the way. Blocks among the student sections that make plenty of noise, clapping the blocks together. There was quite a pep rally earlier this afternoon, a beat Snow pep rally. And this is all part of the hoopla of college basketball, even at the junior college level. It's been a while since we've seen that. Let's take a look at the starting lineups for these two ball clubs. First, it's Snow College. Extremely strong in the starting lineups and you'll find out as we go down. First of all, let's take a look at the starting guard, 6 foot 1 inch sophomore from Cottonwood High School, Wally Nielsen. Nielsen is also quite a baseball player, but has not been participating in baseball at Snow College. He's married with a couple of kids and he's felt like basketball would be about his only prime concern right now and also getting some education from Snow College. The other guard is Brian McCleary, a 6 foot 1 inch freshman from Brighton High School in the Salt Lake county area. Brian McCleary's older brother Larry was a freshman basketball player at the University of Utah but did not play varsity ball. His father is the principal of Jordan High School and you may recognize the name Jerry McCleary, a three year letterman for the University of Utah in the mid-50s, a two year starter and an all conference ball player in the old skyline conference. So McCleary comes from fine basketball stock. At one forward is Larry McKinney, listed at 6 8, closer to 6 10, a sophomore from Uinta High School. At the other forward is John Warburton, listed at 6:3, closer to 6:5, a freshman, a good shooting ball player from Granger High School in the Salt Lake area and at center 6 foot 6 inch Mike Mundy, a sophomore All American honorable mention going for a ranking this year as an all American Last year 66 from Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake for Dixie High School from Hunton High School in Salt Lake. 62 sophomore Brett Allen. Mike Slocum, a six foot freshman from Las Vegas, Nevada will start at the other guard. Up front Cal Paskett, a 6 foot 7 inch all conference forward from South High School. A sophomore in Salt Lake City, Steve Condi. At the other forward, 68 freshman from Skyline High School and at center Kim Garrett, a 66 freshman from Provo High School. We'll be back with the beginning of this ball game after these messages. He said once I get through with Dixie High, Springville High, I got to see this one or what's left of it. But Larry McKinney 6 foot 8 inch list almost 6 foot 10 inch sophomore from Uinta high schools jumping at center court with Cal Paskett, champion in ICAC track adels this past year in the high jump. No coaches questioning. The shot is up and no good by Monday. Rebound brought down by Warburton. Shot up November to rebound. Kalpak it to Garrett. Garrett upcourt to Mike Slocum. Lob pass to Kim Garrett at the top of the key. Garrett wants to get it in deep, does to Conde. Conde fouled from behind by Mike Mundy. Mundy picks up his first personal foul. Condi jumping to knock the ball out of bounds is Monday. Monday. Good hustling. Defensive ball player does not have all the talent in the world. But he works hard and gets every last ounce from his talent. Thereby has made himself all conference. Long pass to Williams, who misses the layup. Williams right near the basket. Got the bullet pass from Condi and couldn't drop it through. Rebound down by Snow College. Indeed to Monday turn around with the right hand. Soft touch. Good Monday with his seventh basket. Good just after muzzle and Duffy puts a shot in to cut the margin to 3. 46, 43 at the half. We'll be back with the first half scoring totals after this. Slim center incorporated. St. George Steel serving all the western states back here at the Dixie College gymnasium where we've had one wild and woolly first half of play, Dixie and Snow College couldn't ask for much else. And much as a championship ball club does, they always get the last word as Mike Duffy hit the short jump shot right at the buzzer to make it 46, 43. Three point lead by Dixie at the snow got the first basket of the ballgame to make it two to nothing. Wally Nielsen right from the tap, came down, hit a 15 footer, 18 footer actually a little farther out to get the first basket of the game for either side. And then it went over a minute before it was anything else but two nothing. Dixie came back to make it two two. Then Snow went up four to two, then six to two and then Dixie made it six to four. Snow made it eight to four, finally had it at 15 to nine at or I should say at 12 to nine, at which point Dixie ran off six straight points, seven straight points to make it 16 to 12. And from that point it was seesaw. Snow came back to take a one point lead then Dixie would take a one point lead. Finally Dixie expanded the lead out to 7:34 to 27. Snow came right back to come close again and then Dixie finally edged out once again with a couple of quick turnovers on steals against the guards as the full court pressure by Brett Allen and Mike Slocum did in Snow College at that point and Snow College fell behind 46:43 at the end of the half. The marching group from Ephraim Land, Badgerland, Snow College performing at halftime and getting quite an ovation from the fans at halftime as they're doing a very good job. Let the parts specialists at Dixie Auto Parts help you next time you feel like doing it yourself. Dixie Auto Parts is a complete parts store with a professional staff. Dixie Auto Parts One of the keys for Dixie showing at Snow College was the great defensive play and offensive play of Kim Garrett and the sudden offensive show put on by Radford Smith as Smith had one of his finest nights of the year against Snow College and that almost got Dixie back to a win. Well tonight Smith has not played yet in this ball game and Kim Garrett only played a little while in the first half before going to sit on the sidelines and we have him unofficially for two personal fouls. Let's take a look luck at the scoring totals. First for Snow College, Mike Duffy with the basket right at the end of the half to pick up his only two points of the night. Brian McCleary, starting guard, has two field goals, one personal foul, one for one from the free throw line and a total of five points. Wally Nielsen has that opening basket and that is it for Wally Nielsen who normally just kills Dixie College from the field. Nielsen usually saves his best nights of the year for the Dixie Rebels, but so far tonight has had but one basket for two points. Points, has two personal fouls. Larry McKinney in foul trouble with three personal fouls but not before he picked up three quick baskets for six points and has a raft of rebounds also and a couple of great defensive plays. Six points to Larry McKinney, John Warburton who was the difference for Dixon for. Let me get that again, a difference for Snow College at Ricks had wrecked and then missed a couple of shots, has one personal foul and one for two from the free throw line and a total of seven points. So Warburton has cooled off significantly. Mike Mundy, the leading scorer in the conference the last two years, if you have to say the most valuable player he was last year for Snow College and has a good shot of getting the MVP award again this year in the ICAC, either McKinney or Mundy. And you'd have to almost go with Mundy because although he doesn't have quite the talent of some of the ballplayers that Snow College has had in recent years, he does make the most out of his talent. He hustles both ends of the floor, gets an armload of rebounds, an arm load of rebounds, is a good shooter and has made himself into a good defensive player and an outstanding rebounder. Mike Mundy has seven baskets, 1, 4, 3 from the free throw line, one personal foul and a total of 15 points to lead Snow College scoring. Dwayne Wallen came off the bench to hit a couple of baskets for four points. And Dave Miller, freshman from Manti High School, almost in the back door of Ephraim, two baskets for a total of four points. There you have it, 15 to Mike Mundy, the only man in double figures. Then you go to Warburton with seventh, six to McKinney, five to McCleary, 4h to Wallen and Miller, two points to Duffy and two points to Wally Nielsen. And there you have your first half scoring for Snow. We'll be back and take a look at Dixie's first half scoring after these messages. See the new ones at Peterson Buick in St. George. It must be Monday because I believe there was one basket that he had taken away. That would have been his points number 14 and 15. Instead he only has 13 in this first half of class. Good balance otherwise for Dixie College. Red Allen started at a guard and is in foul trouble. He has three personal fouls. Allen with two field goals for four points. Mike Slocum with five field goals all for from way out. In fact missed an easy layup that he'll probably be talking to himself for a good while. About one personal foul and a total of 10 points. Scott Corey came in in relief in the first half and did not score. Ricky Williams came in, he had three baskets and missed an easy layup that he'll be talking to himself about. Also a lot pass that he just could not put in. Has one personal foul and a total of six points. Ricky Williams doing a job tonight that he didn't do against no the first time out as Ricky Williams has improved significantly in the second half of the year. Johnny Gilbert came in in relief, has one basket, two for two from the free throw line and a total of four points. Cal Basket has been held under his normal point output, has just the one basket for two points. Neither he nor Warburton seem to get much of an advantage, but if you had to give an advantage as Neil Roberts talked in the pregame show, it has to be to Warburton so far. Basket with just the two points. Kim Garrett has two personal fouls and just one basket for a total of two points, but does have some rebounds. Did not play that much in the first half after he got his second personal foul. And Steve Conde with quite a show tonight has seven baskets, four, four, five from the free throw line and a total of 18 points. Has one personal foul. So Condi leading everybody with 18 points. Although it has been a little ragged at times, neither team has lost the ball that much. We have six turnovers for each side. Now that's unofficial. About as unofficial as you can get. Snow College is by far and away deserving of the championship this year, mainly because they've been able to win on the road and no other team in the ICAC has been able to win on the road this year and they've done it for two straight years and they would like to go through the season undefeated. Right now they're on the short end of a 46, 43 halftime score. Some of the keys going into this ball game how much better Steve Conde does. And he has done a much better job, although Larry McKinney has burned him a couple of times. Steve Conde on balance, has as many rebounds as McKinney, if not more, and has four more field goals, plus some free throws. Looking at the free throw shooting percentage, Dixie has not done badly at all. 6, 4, 7 from the free throw line. Snow College has it 3, 4, 6 from the free throw line. Personal fouls just about even about eight apiece. Let me double check that again. 3, 5, 8, 4, Dixie. 3, 6, 8, 4, Snow College. So personal foul situation has been even. Both coaches, both Ronna Baglin and Neil Roberts wanted to talk to the officials as they went off the floor. Both of them had complaints. Neil Roberts about an obvious traveling situation with Mike Mundy down on this end of the court as he took two big steps and then got the basket anyway. And Ronna Baglin complaining especially about a personal foul that Larry McKinney picked up that turned out to be his third on what appeared to be a blocked shot of Steve Condi's and could have been some contact, but if there was, there wasn't as much contact as there has been in other situations. One thing the officials have done tonight have been to has been to let the ballplayers play. They've let some contact go, but they refused to call unnecessary fouls. There have been some cases of some contact on the pressure on both ends of the court, but it's a no harm, no foul situation where more or less the ball players get their feet tangled up more than any foul on either the offense or the defense. Both coaches jump up. Verona Bateman wants a defensive foul or an offensive foul, depending on which team has the ball. And Neil Roberts is rooting for a foul. Also the needed Coach Garrett in that case, it's a very wise situation. A fairly well officiated ballgame thus far in this ballgame. 46, 43, our halftime score, the fans are alive. More fans coming in as the Dixie High School game is pretty well ended now and Nick Carter is scheduled to come down and give us a report on that.
