Neil Roberts, a former star athlete at Cedar City High School, was named late last night, like 11 o' clock our time to be the new head coach of the Dixie College Rebels. Roberts was a high school all American in football, track and field and basketball at Cedar City. Also played baseball for the Red Men. So he was successful athlete before he ever went to Brigham Young University. But BYU marked the beginning of national and statewide prominence with a freshman basketball team. Well, we played on a team that had a lot of local basketball players. The team, Jim Jimis, which is presently the coach at Hillcrest, Gary Gill, which was from Gunnison High School, also in Utah. And then it was a player from Washington, Ken James and another player from Washington area and Craig Raymond and this freshman team that had a chance averaged 107 points a ball game and went undefe. And later on in the year scrimmaged against the varsity and beat them. And then this team eventually went on and won the WAC twice. Won the NIT the one year that we didn't win the wac and it was really a lot of fun to play with these people. Now there's a story behind that NIT game or that NIT team. Neil Roberts was not in New York, right. I didn't go, you know, at the ball game before we went back to the championship. It was against the University of Utah and the second half of that ballgame received a knee injury and was in a cast that week before we went back and spent all summer in the cast and didn't have a chance to play on the nit. Well, that didn't end Neil Roberts as far as basketball. He completed his master's degree at byu, getting some valuable recruiting experience while working under Stan Watts. Then began at Burley High School for one year in Idaho, one year at Payson High and the last six years at Skyline High. A very power oriented team the last couple of years working to the big men. What about your coaching philosophy, coach? Now you have a chance to choose the ballplayers. I still do enjoy fast breaking and always will and we will always kick out and run and I as far as defensive philosophy, I still believe that your basic defense has got to be a good hard nosed, man to man type of defense. And then from there you can make adjustments. And this year as a team with good talent on a high school team, we did make adjustments, did play a lot of zone and zone traps, did change up and I expect to do the same next year. We will play a multiple of defenses. Now Neil Roberts is now going to be on a college basis. He'll have a chance to do some recruiting. He has some fine recruits coming back. But has the recruiting process begun? Well, the recruiting battle started last night, of course here in Washington the time was 1 o' clock in the morning. Back in St. George, the time was 11 o' clock is the last time that I had a conversation with President Kerr and the confirmation with the job. And this morning at 9:00 here, which was 7:00' clock in Utah, the recruiting process started. Do you have any prospects already? I say with tongue in cheek. And then Neil Roberts talking from Washington D.C. answered yes, definite prospects. And I think some of the prime prospects are people that played on our high school team last year. And then from there I think our basic recruiting base will be similar to what it has been in the past. The Las Vegas area and the Utah area with the possibility of bringing in some athletes, one or two from different areas across the United States. A fine choice as the new head basketball coach at Dixie College, Neal Roberts. He'll be coming back from Washington D.C. where he's participating with the McDonald's High School all American basketball game going on back there as one of the coaches. He'll begin work midweek next week. That's a look at sports. We'll see you again tomorrow. And that's a look at sports as brought to you by Zion Sporting Goods, 600 east and Tabernacle street streets in St. George. Zion Sporting Goods is a complete sporting goods center and is a qualified gunsmithing shop. Take your gun problems and repairs, including bluing to. It's time now for a look at sports brought to you each Tuesday and Thursday at this hour by Zion Sporting goods, corner of 600 East Tabernacle streets in St. George. Zion Sporting Goods is your complete sporting goods and gunsmithing headquarters. Good afternoon, I'm your host Larry Jewell and it's time now for a look at sports. We had a chance to talk with someone who is into do it yourself sports and a most unusual person, Mr. Nolan Lee of St. George. We'll be back and talk with him in just 60 seconds. Gordon Chamberlain of Zion Sporting Goods says we offer the prices that are right all the time. If you happen to be a fortunate individual with a tax refund, you'll find Zion Sporting Goods a good place to invest it. Right now Gordon has a couple of Colt Pythons in stock. In addition to Colt troopers, stainless steel Ruger 357s and Smith Wesson Model 276 inchers. He has a good selection of new and used guns that are sure to please even the most discriminating, priced at the area's most reasonable prices too. Yes, for guns, gunsmithing and gun repairs by the man with the know how its Zion Sporting Goods where you'll also find a complete sporting goods headquarters. Choose from tennis, baseball, basketball, football, handball or camping needs and pay less for quality merchandise. Stop by Zion Sporting Goods soon and inquire about their march bonanza. ZION Sporting Goods Mr. Nolan Lee of St. George is into do it yourself sports in a big way. The Dixie Dropout is a skydiving group here in St. George is taking on new class members and among them is a 63 year old grandfather, 22 grandchildren to be exact, by the name of Nolan Lee. And we had a chance to talk with him earlier today. Why are you doing it, Nolan? I've always been interested in things that were interesting or I'm not exactly what you'd call a thrill seeker, but I've tried to be able to master my fears and problems that as I Came up through, you know, my life so that I could be. Enjoy different things. I have the philosophy that fear is something that is a handicap regardless of what it is. If you have it under control and know how to use caution when necessary and reason that you needn't be handicapped with this problem of fear. It's obvious that you must be getting some reaction from your family, right? I have a son here that's with me that he's quite interested in. He's telling a lot more people about it than I am. Everybody around he works out the Dixie Lumber working. Some fellows are quite sport minded and he's had a lot more respect, I believe for me since he. They've kind of admired me through him, you know. Oh, what about your wife? Well, to be frank with you, I'm not even sure that she knows. I gotta explain that. She's in Portland, Oregon right now helping with the two newest additions to the grandchildren, two baby girls. And congratulations, by the way, Mr. Lee, when you first had your first jump. Now admittedly you're on static line right now. Haven't had the free fall when you had your first jump. Were there any surprises? It's quite something when you look out over that space, out of open cockpit and have to of your own free will and choice, just let go and leave the plane. And I guess I was startled a little bit by the sudden jerk. Was about the main thing that bothered me from there on down. It was, you know, really lovely and interesting. Next question is, how long do you plan to skydive? I don't know how much skydiving I'll do. I'll just take it as it comes. But I want to stay with it long enough at least that I can try some free falling. An interesting man, Nolan Lee. Let's talk about what it's like to skydive. You've been up in a plane before. What's the difference in visibility? Definitely you have a lot more awareness and visibility and I don't know, it's. There is something to it where you're going down through the air in a chute. That's different than a plane, sail plane or any other kind of a plane. I don't know how it compares to this hang gliding I've kind of taken. Maybe if it gets around, I might even try that because it appeals to me in a lot of ways and I think it gives you more of a sense of freedom than being in a stationary plane. Well, that looks like the next challenge, hang gliding. If there is any one thing that you'd still like to do? What would it be besides hang gliding? I'd like to. I'd like to snow ski. I've never been a product of the Southwest and haven't been around snow much in my youth. But I do know I've got a son that really snow skis. But it takes a lot more conditioning than it does to skydive an old man like me without any real. Well, I do have pretty good health. I never get sick, but I'm not in no condition to gluttons do any snow skiing. But I can do this skydiving without being worried about that. Nolan Lee, the latest student of the Dixie Dropout Skydiving team here in St. George. Join us again next Tuesday for another look at sports. It's time now for a look at sports brought to you by Bailey's Auto Sales, your dealer for top dependable used cars and trucks. Last night the Dixie College women were upset by Fort Lewis College 59 to 52. That was the first win of the year for the defending Intermountain Conference champs. Dixie College led until the final four minutes of the game when Fort Lewis came from behind to win it. Christine Tee had 20 points for the Lady Rebels and Rose Labram came up with 15. Tonight Dixie college men open the two game road trip at Utah Tech and that game is a must win for coach Doug Allred and his charges. By the way, you'll be able to hear the play by play of that game beginning at 7:15 with a pre game show tomorrow night. That by the way that broadcast tonight is on Katie at FM. Make sure of that FM and tomorrow night also at 7:15 with the broadcast time Dixie versus Ricks College. Now this is not going to be as easy a road trip as many people think because Ricks can defeat many teams at home and Utah Tech has some firepower. Dixie is going to have to do the same thing with Utah Tech that they did the last time they met and that's to shut off Paul Pratt and Steve Brown. Then they've got a shot at defeating Utah Tech. The Dixie High School Flyers take on a cross county rival Hurricane High School tonight. That game will be broadcast on KDXU AM beginning at 7:45 with the pregame show. Coach Lane Christensen has been a little upset with his boys because they've been so up and down this year. They've had some good wins and they've had some disappointing losses. They're the Flyers after a poor start have been red hot winning five out of their last eight games. Their last time out they lost a heartbreaker to a very strong Boulder team out of Nevada. We'll take a final look at sports after this. It's Bailey's Auto Sales for top four wheel drive vehicles. It's also Bailey's for dependable used cars and it's also Bailey's Auto Sales for affordable used cars and trucks. This week at Bailey's auto sales a 72 CJ5 Jeep with V8 and top wanted features on sale at 2895. And for the sports minded, a 72 Pontiac Firebird with power steering, brakes and air and vinyl top. You have to see it at 2695. Come in. Check them out at Bailey's Auto Sales, 147 West St. George Boulevard. The poor weather in the east has caused the canceling of the harness racing cart at Buffalo Raceway tonight. Also, the NBA basketball game game between the Buffalo Braves and the Cleveland Cavaliers scheduled for Buffalo has been post the Minnesota Ohio State basketball game scheduled for Columbus, Ohio tomorrow night has been shifted to Minnesota. They'll make that one up when the game that was scheduled at Minnesota between the two rivals on 14 February will be, excuse me, on 10 February will be played in Columbus, provided the weather is better. There's also a possibility that the Illinois at Purdue game tomorrow might also be postponed. Jerry Judkins with an 18 point performance last night as the University of Utah defeated New Mexico past the 1000 point mark in his career and becomes only the 12th University of Utah basketball player to reach that plateau. Of course, his younger brother Jerry Judkins is playing for the Dixie College Rebels. And by the way, Jerry Judkins as a reserve forward has moved into the 10th place in rebounding in the ICAC. Not too bad, especially when you consider that Jerry is only a reserve that's a Look at Sports we'll see you again Monday Bailey's Auto Sales has just brought you a look at sports. Salt Lake County's breach of contract suit against former Utah Stars owner Bill Daniels finally got underway today in U.S. district Court for Utah. The county filed suit in 1976 after that Denver businessman folded the Utah Stars of the now defunct American Basketball Association. The suit seeks to recover lease payments for the Salt palace on games the Stars had scheduled for the 1975-76 season. Deputy County Attorney Marcus Theodore said the Salt palace had attempted to mitigate damages by booking other events on some of the dates originally held open for the ABA Games with the Stars, but he said the Salt palace was unable to completely fill the void. The county is seeking $170,000 in total damages on a five year contract. A little sidelight Marcus Theodore, the deputy county attorney, is the older brother of George Theodore, the former New York Mets star. That's the same one from Salt Lake City. We'll talk about tennis and baseball after this. Let Paradise Motors introduce you to the new Mazda RX7, the first sports car with a rotary engine. According to Road and track magazine, the RX7 outperforms the Datsun 280Z, the Triumph TR7, the Fiat and the Porsche. The most important thing is that it costs $2,000 less than the Datsun and 4,000 less than the Porsche. Mazda's RX7 is for you. Aerodynamically designed for performance on the road, see the Mazda RX7, available at Paradise Motors, 205 West St. George Boulevard NCAA has invited five individual players from the Western Athletic Conference teams to Compete in the 1978 NCAA tennis meet May 22 at the University of Georgia. Arizona State University is the wax titleist this year, so the entire squad from ASU will be going along with singles players Kent Crawford of the University of Utah, Randall Clark and Warren Eber of the University of Arizona and Tim Garcia of New Mexico. In addition, in the doubles competition, Crawford will team with Dave Scherbeck of the University of Utah in the individual doubles competition and Eber and Woody Supple of Arizona will also team up. That's in addition to the Arizona State University team. Second place Grand Canyon College placed five players on the NAIA District 7 All Conference baseball team. First place Mesa College had but one player, but the coach at Mesa was voted the coach of the year from Southern Utah State. Bob Hill of Grand Canyon shared the honors with Brett Johnson of Southern Colorado. Southern Utah State ball players Danny Nuttall, the top shortstop, and Warren Hatch was named as the number one catcher in Region 7. NCAA Division 1 Baseball Committee says the winner of the Western Athletic Conference series this week at Tempe, Arizona will host the Rocky Mountain Regional Playoff May 26th through the 29th. BYU meets Arizona State for the WAC baseball crown in the best of three playoffs beginning tomorrow night. Now, either the loser of that series or Arizona will represent the Western Athletic Conference. Also in an at large berth, by the way, in the first round of Utah's Prep Class 4A baseball tournament, which began yesterday at Murray's Ken Price Park. Cottonwood shut out Clearfield seven to nothing, Kearns over Bountiful seven to one, Bingham edged Viewmont three two and Brighton got by Skyline three to one. Today's action postponed because of rain. Names out of the past Atlanta Braves assigned former major league pitcher Jim Bouton to a contract with their Savannah farm club of the Class 2A Southern League. That's the equivalent of what Bruce Hurst is playing in the Red Sox organization. And another name out of the past. Remember the golden boy David Clyde, the rookie with the Texas Rangers A few years back had problems, personal and physical problems. Finally traded to the Cleveland Indians over the winter. Well, today Clyde may have started his way back as he went all the way for the Cleveland Indians in throwing a four hitter at the Oakland A's and winning three to two. David Clyde, he's still a very young man and now possibly a comeback underway. A final note after this. Let Paradise Motors introduce you to the new Mazda RX7, the first sports car with a rotary engine. According to Road and track magazine, the RX7 outperforms the Datsun 280Z, the Triumph TR7, the Fiat and the Porsche. See the Mazda RX7 available at Paradise Motors, 205 West St. George Boulevard. Interesting note. Robert James, the head of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the commissioner says that he plans to spearhead a fight to toughen academic requirements for college athletes. He made the statement at the end of the Atlantic Coast Conference annual meeting in South Carolina. What that means we have yet to find out. But it's interesting that there is a move afoot to toughen the requirements academic requirements for the nation's athletes. That's a look at sports we'll see again tomorrow. And that's a look at sports as brought to you by Paradise Motors, 205 West St. George Boulevard. Lease a Mazda or a Jeep from Paradise Motors or buy with up to 48 months financing. See, some people obey the law, some are above the law. I'm above the laws of boxes. When the man fights me that's bigger than everybody else excepting him and me. Not so right. See, the President is above the law. When the President Ford comes through New York City, going to the airport. He can go 100 mile an hour with his motorcade and go through all the lights. That light don't mean him. I am bigger than all the champions put together. I'm bigger than the super bowl, the Rose bowl, the Kentucky Derby, then out of the 500. When I go, the world, truly the world listens. I still hate the officials. You know, they're bad. And whatever level you play on, the officials are terrible, you know, but you know, you're not supposed to say they cost you games, so I can't say that. But, you know, all officials are bad. Some are just worse than others. And that's the only thing I can. I enjoy the coaching and I enjoy this team and it's basketball and that's my life. Time now for a look at sports. Good afternoon. I'm your host, Larry Jewell. Well, it was a big night for Dixie College last night. Win number 21. And it was quite an all around performance as everyone who got in the game had a chance to start last night, had their moments. Leading everything was Chris McMullen with 19 points in the first half, 21 on the night. Brent Wade hit 15 points in the second half and tied Chris with 21 points to lead Dixie. That's a career high for Brent Wade, 120 to 83 over the Weber State JV. Next action will be Friday afternoon against the BYU junior varsity, a team that might be loaded to the gills to try to get at Dixie. The new rankings for the NJCAA are out. No, Dixie is not in them, but neither is Rick's. Only one school from this area is ranked in the top 20. North Idaho is ranked 12th, tied with Gainesville. College of Georgia. Three Rivers College of Missouri is still ranked number one with a 25. NCAA reclassified 39 football schools from Division 1A to Division 1AA because of legislation passed at the special convention in December. Now all Ivy League schools except Yale were put in Division 1 AA. Also reclassified were six independents, Colgate, Holy Cross, Northeast Louisiana, North Texas State, Richmond and William and Mary. In addition, the changes affect schools from five other conferences. The Mid American, the Southern Southland, Missouri Valley and the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. Well, does that mean Utah State is now Division 1 AA? Not necessarily. There are six schools that are still up in the air in limbo between the two rankings. Cincinnati, Miami, Ohio, Southwestern, Louisiana, Western Michigan, and two schools from the pcaa, Pacific and Utah State University. A major event in skiing today for the United States. Steve Mayer is the first American male skier ever to win a gold medal in an individual event at the World Ski Championships. Mayer won today's giant slalom in Austria. Billy Kidd won a gold medal in the World Ski Championships before. But Kidd explains the difference. In 1970, I won the gold in the combined, which is combine points, in the three alpine events of slalom, giant slalom and downhill. Kind of an accumulation of points through there. No American has ever American man has come through and won a gold in an individual event. And so that's what was so exciting for the skiers. It's as exciting to win the gold medal in the World Championships as it is Olympics because it's the same competition. And I'm sure the Steve is in heaven right now. Yes, he is. That's Billy Kidd, who was in heaven just 12 years ago when he won Salt Lake. Golden Eagles bowed to a Central Hockey League All Star team last night, four to three. It was a first in history. CHL All Star game. We'll have a look at more sports, specifically soccer, in St. George after this. Here in the St. George area and in southern Utah. Mike Dobson, who is the president of District 31 of the Utah Youth Soccer association that covers the St. George area, says that the season will begin soon. March through May and September and October. The difference this year is that the soccer is amalgamated with the Utah Youth Soccer Association. That means children from the age of 4 to 18 can enjoy a properly organized soccer program, which is beneficial and reciprocal throughout the state of Utah. Now, the sign on fee is $22, and for that the children are insured. They obtain a full soccer uniform, a reversible shirt with a patch, soccer patch and a number on the back, shorts and socks which is theirs to keep. They also are provided. Each team that they belong to is provided three soccer balls which are brand new, a net to carry them, first aid equipment, goalkeeper shirt and cones for practice. We provide a clinic for them and we instruct them prior to any league play. So it's really beneficial to the children in Southern Utah. But you ask how many Utah and Southern Utah kids are involved in youth soccer? There are about 15,000 children playing soccer in Utah right now. And we've been left behind in St. George. But the area is beginning to grow and there is talent. In St. George. Our youth under 16 youth soccer team, the Ambassadors, has been chosen to represent Utah in the Silver Tournament in Las Vegas in March. They will play against 200 other teams from all over the United States for a special silver trophy. So we have some talent in this area, but there is always a need for adults to help out in the youth soccer league. In fact, Mike Dobson, a member of the St. George Police Department kind of got drafted to be President of District 31. I volunteered my services and they told me I was the president. So we have a board of directors consisting of local businessmen in the area. And, and we're receiving a lot of help from parents. Now if anybody feels they'd like to referee or coach, we'll put a seminar on for them. And we'd like volunteers to get in touch with me at the police department or at my home. Mike Dobson of the St. George Police Department, heavily involved in the youth soccer league. We'll take a look a final look at sports after. This. Is an absolute zoo. Just in case you're on the run from nine to five. Just in case you arrange an easy rendezvous. You got your dial. Dial. The Judkins Rains family is going to be dominant in Utah college athletics, especially in basketball for the next few years. Danny Raines, of course, will sign a letter of intent to play at the University of Utah. He's already made that commitment. Jeff Judkins, his cousin, is already a star there. Jerry Judkins, another cousin, a brother of Jeff, is a star with Dixie College. And Jay Judkins, who is a high school all Stater at Highland High School, will be going to the University of Utah this year. By the way, there's another cousin in the family, I should say a cousin of The Judkins, Danny Vrain's little sister, who's not so little, she's close to 6ft tall and maybe the best female track and field athlete in the history of Skyline High School. In fact, of all people, Neil Roberts, the new coach at Dixie College, you add Danny Raines as one of his ball players this past three years at Scott On High, says Danny Vrain's sister may be a better athlete than Danny Vrains, who is considered one of the top six high school basketball players in the country this past year. Kiki Vanderway, a freshman forward at UCLA on the basketball team this year, has strong ties. In fact, there is a multi family organization of the Vandeway's. See father Ernie Vanderway, used to be a star pro basketball player with the New York Knicks. Kiki's sister, Tana Vanderway, was a star swimmer for the U.S. olympic team in 1976. His mother, Colleen Hutchins Vanderway, was a former Miss Utah. And Colleen Hutchins happens to be the younger sister of Mel Hutchins, a Utah or BYU All American and a former All Pro basketball player. Now, Mel Hutchins had a couple of other nephews, Troy Jones and Scott Jones. Scott Jones started at UCLA and finished up his basketball career at the University of Utah and Troy Jones played basketball at byu. It's a family affair surrounding collegiate athletics. The New York Yankees have dropped two of the three games they've played so far and Reggie Jackson is not having a good, good year so far, committing a two base error in the Saturday game that helped lead to a Milwaukee victory. And yesterday he got picked off first base in the ninth inning with a chance for the Yankees to tie. This final note is not for sports actually, but I'm quite happy about it. My wife gave birth to our second daughter today. That's two children for us, a nine pound girl. I'm happy like I've won the World Series. So I guess that's a look at sports for today. It looks like women are taking over the sports world too. Well, not lock, stock and barrel, but at least they're making much headway in publicity in the sports world. Of course, in tennis and golf it's always been that way. And now in auto racing with Janet Guthrie. But even at the less than professional level, at the collegiate or even high school level, women are taking over. For example, big news for Utah athletes is that 2 Brigham Young University players won their first round matches yesterday in the US Tennis Association Women's National Collegiate Tennis Championships. At San Antonio, Texas. Tracy Tanner beat Jana Hanks of Northeast Louisiana and Barbara Barnes defeated Cindy Ursich of San Diego State. Karen Kennington, who has been the powerhouse for the BYU women's tennis teams, lost to Miami's Judy Gibson yesterday. Nancy Lopez, back to golf, had interesting comments following her victory yesterday in the New Rochelle, New York tournament. After a seven under par 65 to defeat Joanne Carner for the second week in a row and collect her third straight LPGA tournament, Ms. Lopez was asked how her season was going and in her words quote, I'm very happy. Not just because I'm winning, but because I'm living. I'm on a golf course and I'm enjoying the sunshine and all the people. And then she said, if I'm asleep, I hope I never wake up. Nancy Lopez, at only 21, is going to rewrite some of the women's golf record books. We'll take a look at more sports after this. We'll talk more sports after this. Americans still care about their country, and they care about one another. Americans learned many lessons while celebrating the bicentennial. Reverend Lawrence McNamara reflects on one lesson. In 1976 we rediscovered that it's okay to feel good about ourselves as long as we're honest. We know we have problems individually and as a people, but we also know that we can and will do something about them. This includes our determination to do something about poverty in America, to change the things that keep 40 million people locked in a cycle of loneliness, hunger, powerlessness. We know we can't eliminate poverty overnight or acting alone, but we can work at it with others. Start with your local church, synagogue or community agency. Like the people who started this country and who helped it grow, Americans today are looking for a new start. So let's begin again. Together. Campaign for Human Development United States Catholic Conference Ron LaFleur, the center fielder for the Detroit Tigers, had quite a celebration last night. It was his birthday. He's officially listed as 25 years of age, but depending on which record you look at, he's either 27 or 29, possibly. Ron LaFleur, of course, is the former convict who is now playing Major League Baseball. Got his chance by playing softball in prison. LaFleur had two home runs yesterday, and as far as I can recollect, that's the first time he's ever done that in a Major League baseball game. Helped give Mark Fidrich of the Detroit Tigers his third straight win. College Baseball World Series is now down to three teams. Arizona State defeated South Carolina 6 to 2. Arizona State will meet Southern Illinois. Southern Illinois down Cal State La. 9 to 7. The winner of that Arizona State Southern Illinois game will meet South Carolina Saturday for the NCAA Championship. It's a human study. Whenever a baseball ball player is traded and Tom Seaver definitely felt human yesterday. It was interesting, his reaction when he was packing his locker to leave the Mets to head towards Cincinnati. Tom Seifer, it's sad because you leave, you leave memories and, and you leave people that you work, work with for 12 years, you know, that's, that's the emotional part of it when you're leaving a Buddy Harrelson and a Jerry Kuzman and a Jerry Grody. That's what it's all about. It's people that you work with and that you love and have respect for. And I just, I just was not happy working for the man anymore. And I'm, you know, I think it's healthy for everybody. The man is M. Donald Grant, the chairman of the board of the Met. Somehow people get the feeling that ball players are somewhat autom. Automatons, that they don't have feelings. And indeed they do. Seaver had some good notes about his team that he's about to join. The Cincinnati Reds. They're an outstanding baseball team. They do every aspect of the game correctly. They run, they hit well. They hit cut off men. They, you know, they hit with power, outstanding defense. You know, they are an outstanding baseball team. You know, it's going to be interesting to sit on their side of the field and look over there and watch, you know, from their side and watch them play. A little footnote on the Tom Seifer trade. Father Kenneth Grimes opened yesterday's floor session of the Ohio House of Representatives with a prayer. After asking for divine guidance, Father Grimes had this petition to the Lord. Thank the New York Mets for us. End quote. Father Kenneth Grimes. After the laughter subsided, the house got down to business, we think, anyway, looking forward to the Cincinnati Reds and Tom Seaver. Remember Cornell Green, who used to be a basketball star at Utah State, later went on to become an all pro defensive back with the Dallas Cowboys. Although he didn't play college football, he had a couple of famous brothers or relatively famous brothers in athletic circles. Creedel Green was a star running back at the University of Washington and another brother, Jerry Green, commonly called Pumpsey Green, was a switch hitting infielder with a Boston Red Sox and later with the New York Mets. By the way, Pumpsey Green was the first black ever to play a regular season game with the Boston Red Sox. Dr. J. Julius Irving, who was recently sold to the Philadelphia 76ers from the New York Mets New York Nets, actually began his pro basketball career with the now defunct Virginia Squires. The New York Yankees used to be known as the New York Highlanders. The Los Angeles Dodgers, back when they were in Brooklyn were always known as the Brooklyn Dodgers, but earlier than the Brooklyn Dodgers were known as the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers. That Rick Nelson, the rock and roll singer of the Nelson family, married the daughter of former Michigan All American Tom Harmon. Yes, Rick's wife Chris is also the sister of Mark Harmon, a star quarterback at ucla. But Rick's dad, Ozzie Nelson, while he was learning to be a band leader and quite a personality, was a star quarterback at Rutgers University. Bob Griese, the star quarterback for Miami Dolphins, played his college football at Purdue but also was on the basketball team as the top reserve guard. Luke Powell, the first baseman with the Cleveland Indians. His full name is John Wesley Powell, just like the explorer who Lake Powell is named after that Bud Grant and Arnie Farum. Bud Grant of the coach of the Minnesota Vikings and Arnie Faron, the University of Utah athletic director, were once teammates on the Minneapolis Lakers championship pro basketball team. That Alfred Manuel Pisano is actually New York Yankee manager Billy Martin. That was his name when he was born. Gaylord Perry, the major league pitcher was once considered such a poor hitter that his manager with the San Francisco Giants, Al Dark at that time said of Gaylord, he'll probably hit his first home run when a man sets foot on the moon. Gaylord Perry hit his first major league home run in 1969, the same day Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. And that's a look at sports. We'll see you again tomorrow.
